Can you believe it??? Right after I posted that last message I went to go eat. And guess what. My check engine light came on. It better not be the MAS again. It's never come on before. It's not even doing anything weird. I was just driving along and it came on. Arrrggg!!!

When my check engine light came on, I noticed no abnormalities in engine power/noise. However, when the dealer diagnosed the problem, he said my MAS was 'faulty'.

Rince, i had the same thing. Car drove normal but engine light was on and MAS was faulty.

I'd get the MAS fixed ASAP casue it controls the amount of air let intot he engine. A faulty MAS can screw up the catalytic converter due to improper fuel/air ratio mixture. I had the cats on my car changed (under emissions warranty). The parts cost alont would have been over $3000 CDN.

The rubbing alcohol method, if i can remember correctly, was to place the MAS in a ziploc back with rubbing alcohol and shake it. Then let it dry and then re-install.

Good luck.

Well I'm going to get the codes checked on it today. It it is the MAS, I'll have to try the alcohal in bag method. I still have my old one too, do hopefully one of them will start working.

Ive got a K&N on mine ,Cant say ive noticed much or any difference in performance.I dont have a MAS fitted on my car either,it all depends i think on what type of fuel injection system you have. From what i can tell if you have a Bosch PMS sequential injection system on models upto 06/96 for a 1.8 litre and 5/97 for a 2.0 litre you wont have a MAS fitted. Also as an afterthought if K&N filters were causing the MAS to fail wont they be liable for supplying a product that effectivly knackers the engine??

I was just thinking that too...

I mean Ive read on forums that peoples MAS fails alot anyway, regardless of having a K&N filter installed. Its either that mercedes MAS is REALLY sensitive, or its a POS for failing so often.
Maybe its just really bad luck of coincedence that you guys have had failing MAS at around the same time that you had your K&N filter installed.

Its been about a week and a half since I had my K&N installed, no check engine light yet *knock on wood*.

The MAS on our cars is a special one. It uses a hot film to sense the amount of air enetering the engine. As the air passes through the MAS, the hot film cools down and the semsor measures the amount of air based on how cool it is.

I believe that is how our masses work from the traditional 'plunger' style MAS.

Man, I had to go to the doctor because my shoulder popped out of the socket so I didn't get to autozone. I will still try to go tonight and let you know what is up as soon as I find out. Autozone does check codes for free, right?

Well, Autozone doesn't have the computer for my car. I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that the alcohol trick works! I put my old mass meter in a bag with alcohol, swished it around, and let it dry for a while. I put it back on and it works. Last time it was on, my car would hardly even run. Now it runs fine. The bad news is my check engine light is still on. I'm taking it to Munich Sport tomorrow to get the codes checked on it. Oh yeah, Munich Sport is a German performance car place here in town. Uh oh, I'm starting to sound like a salesman. Better quit while I'm still ahead.

All right, now I have some bad news and some bad news, and this doesn't even include the bad news about the space shuttle. The alcohol trick didn't work. It lasted for about 2 or 3 hours and then went out again. So much for that. The other bad news is that my EGR valve is what is making the engine light come on. So now I have to fork out 200 bucks for one of those.

And how would I go about doing this? Will the check engine light go off. What about my gas mileage?
