K&N Air Filter -- NOTICE A DIFFERENCE?

I got mine installed earlier today at rc imports in rockville, maryland.

immediately as I drove the car off the lot, I noticed a smoother
acceleration, seemed almost faster slightly. anyone else have similar experiences once they got their K&N hooked up?

my car has now been modded and no longer stock, woot!

Is there that much of a difference or was your OEM air filter just dirty?

I notice a difference when I changed my old OEM one for a new OEM one too.

And it could be pyschological too since you paid for mod. LOL I'm curious to know too for next time.

I changed out my clean filter to a K&N and noticed a difference. It gets even better after about the first 200 miles. The ecu recognizes that it's getting more air and gives the car more gas. I strongly believe in K&N. I think it is the best bang for the buck in terms of horsepower.

whats some more HP mods I can do without doing anything too drastic like spending over 200+ bucks :P

I'm going to get an avantgarde grill next... then some aftermarket plug and play xenon kit.

Hi, can U show us the photo on how is the filter look like ?

I have actually taken somebody's advise to order a "Greenfilter" as I read in that post that conic filter might not be too ideal for MB coz it is very hot under the hoot. Greenfilter cost me about US$100 (incl delivery from UK)!

It's just a drop in filter. You don't change out parts or anything. It's still rectangular and everything.

What the? Just go look at your air filter and imagine that it's red. It's just made of cotton fabric instead of paper to let more air through.

heres a pic of the filter I had installed. its the rectangular one, not the round one in pic.

only cost 40 bucks at performance products, i had a 15% coupon

didnt want to install it myself first time, so had my mechanic do it for free.

installation was just popping open the hood, unlatching the clamps on your air flow thing and on the black box cover that connects to it. disconnect the air flow thing, removing black box cover and thats where your old air filter is. take it out, vacuum the crap in there, insert new k&n air filter and just put everything back.

I have one. The same week I put it on I noticed a difference....my wallet was lighter.

The MAS failed the following week. I believe, backed up by other people who have had problems with K&N with thier MAS getting oil on the hot film causing the MAS to fail. $700 cdn lighter my wallet was.

I only use the OEM filter from MB now.

I like the way Rincewind described the installation process.

Narci,

You know, the MAS meter is only about $196+shipping on bimmerzone.com. And like the Air Filter (K&N or OEM), you can install it yourself.

I'm guilty of paying a mechanic to do it too. It was worth the diagnositc to find out why the "check engine" light was on though. I ended up paying like $315 for part, diagnostic, & labor. So equivalent to CND, I guess. Oh well, live and learn.

im not very car adept with names of things :P

narci, do you know if your mass air sensor failed as a direct result of using K&N filter?

i had to replace mine a year ago, but it was with a normal filter and i dont think they were related.

you got me scared now, i just had the k&n put in.

anyone else have similar probs with their filter?

My MAS failed before I did the K&N swap. I don't think more airflow will hurt a MAS. It's just a sensor with a computer chip, nothing mechanical about it.

I was told that my C180 does not have a MAS ?! is that true ?

Why I ask is because I noticed most of the MB c-class owner encountered some problem (somehow)with it, other than the cable harness ****.

$196? I highly doubt it unless it used ro something. Nobody makes an aftermarket MAS for a 1997 W202 except for Bosche and you have to get it from MB. Trust me..I even called up BoschE Canada and they don't stock the part.

I remember on the old benzsport that quite a few people had a failing MAS. Some of which only happened after the K&N was put in. Some just washed the MAS with rubbing alcohol as a quick fix and for soem it worked...and some not.

I remember asking my mechanic about why it's so expensive. He said it was the type of MAS, it was a hot film MAS (i think). Same as in Porsche. (Over $1000 part for a Porcshe).

Narci,

Minor correction. For my 1999 C280, the mass meter is $196.26 on bimmerzone.com. For your 1997, it's $251.03+shipping. Even cheaper on www.thebenzbin.com at $248.81 & FREE SHIPPING for your 1997!

ahem....To my distraught, shipping is not free with bimmerzone. It is extremely cheap, but not free. It still comes out cheaper than the benzbin and thepartsbin because their prices are so much lower. I just ordered a bunch of brake parts from bimmerzone and saved $18.56 over thebenzbin. Yes, this is even after shipping. Someone asked why my MAS failed. I don't know. I just went to press down the gas peddle one time and it felt like I was running on a lawn mower engine. I took it in to get it fixed and they charged me over $600. I'm about to go back over to who fixed and ask why they charge $2000 per hour on labor because it couldn't have taken them more than 5 minutes to put that in. I also want to try cleaning my old one with alcohal and see what that does. If it fixes it I'm going to be really mad.
