What kind of C280 do you have? Is it the inline or the V6?

It's the inline. I read in another thread that you can just clean the port to fix it. My check engine light has been on and the codes said it was the EGR valve. Do you know anything about this cleaning of the port thing?

The EGR valve itself is located on the rear of the exhaust manifold, but your problem is most likely the EGR tube plugged up at the intake manifold. Follow the tube from the EGR valve, behind the engine, and to the intake manifold. This is where it's probably plugged up.

how much mileage on your c280?

I was reading my mercedes warranty booklet and there are 2 seperate warranties. one for 4 year/50,000 miles, and another one for a federal emissions warranty that covers up to 8 year/80,000 miles.

under the list of components covered in the federal emission warranty it covers the:

EGR valve with pressure transducer
EGR switching valve

You can have the dealer fix this for free if you are still under 80k miles.

About 3/4 of the way down this page detail the process of cleaning the EGR valve. Hope this helps.

My CEL has been on for quite some time now without *any* problems. I've never been the type to ignore reactive problems on a car but from what I've read in the past concerning the CEL, I decided to put it off for awhile. I intend to clean my EGR valve within the next few days, will let you know how it goes.

The dealer told me if the cel comes on and there is no difference in performance or the way the car feels, the likely cause is the EGR valve. We confirmed this by running the diagnostics. If you have rough idling or your car feels like it is running on about 50 percent power it is the mass airflow sensor. Thanks for the info Damian. This won't be the first time this forum has saved me well over 100 dollars.

It probably wasn't as bad. My car wouldn't go over 10 miles per hour when it went out.

maybe my dealer diagnosed a faulty air mass meter so he could milk me of my money

They like to blame the MAS cause they usually charge $500 to replace it...even though the part is about $220 and it takes about 5 min to replace it. Crazy.

If anyone clears out the carbon buildup, please post pics of where the buildup takes place. I'm pretty sure that's why my CEL has been on for 2 years...until Steve took out the bulb for me.

Could you please tell me which one is the egr valve? I see two on the left side (standing in front of the engine). It's the one on the back closest to the firewall? I was going to run a speedometer cable through there, but wasn't sure which one the egr is. Thanks.
