oil weight in my 97 c230

hi, i own a 97 c230, i just recently purchased it. i am unsure of the oil to use in it. i work at a auto garage and i changed it with 10/30 about 300 miles ago. the timing chain does rattle at cold start so i know im going to need to do a timing tentionsior and guides soon. the car has 183,000 miles on it. whats ur thoughts guys? ive been reading 0w40 but gah that scairs the heck outta me on a motor with that many miles!

Engine oils are Recommended based on the ambient temperatures vehicle is operated in.

1997 C230: Minimum Temperature greater than 50F (10C) --sae 20W40 or 20W50
Temperature 14 - 50F (-10 - 10C) --- sae 10W30
Maximum Temperature less than 14F (-10C) --- sae 5W20 or 5W30

I use a high performance Synthetic blend

I live in a tropical country and if I use synthetic oil or even synthetic blend, the oil forms some sludge after awhile. What we use in hot countries are just premium oil and have it change every 5000KM. I use Mobil 15W-40
