BAS & ABS light

I have a 1998 C230 with 99,944 miles. The BAS and ABS lights come on a few seconds after starting. The cruise control does not work. All three rear brake lights come on when the brake petal is pushed down. The brakes seem to be operating fine and same way they were working before the lights came on. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ken

It could be as simple as your battery getting weak. Have it load tested. A weak battery can cause the error.

I had the battery and alternator output tested at AutoZone. Both checked out good.
If the brake lights work, is it still possible to have a faulty brake switch that would cause the BAS and ABS lights to come on?

Good news for you I think...........I had exactly the same symptoms on my '98 C200. Heard about the brake light switch as a likely cause, bought one (about£15), fitted it and it fixed the problem nicely. Give it a go.

bas/abs light

Had the same issue on my 2000 C230K. Replaced the brake light switch, $20cdn. Fixed transmission gear selector from park, brake lights and turned the bas/abs light. Wife said before that the brake lights would come on for a second, then go out when stopping. Switch is easy to replace. Look near the top of the pedal, plunger switch with two connectors, turn 1/4 turn to cw.

Well...I finally changed out the break light switch. BAS and ABS lights went off. It worked just like you said. It was not as easy as others had mentioned. It took about an hour to get the old switch disconnected. Partly, because I was trying to change it in 20 degree weather. The switch snaps in place with very small lip connections. They are a little hard to see. I just worked with it until it came loose. Installing the new one was quick. Total investment: $25.00.
