99 c230 kompressor - electrical short somewhere
A few things:
I believe the blower regulator is fried. When I started it the other day it smelled like an electrical fire smell so I am sure i have to replace that. easy to do myself?
Immediately upon the smell:
----the dash cluster light stays illuminated.
----my blower wont shut off and I cant control the speed of the blower so I pulled the fuse and it stopped. (even with key removed)
----my battery drains (have to jump it)
-----all fuses look good under hood and in trunk
how do i get the center cluster removed so I can remove the blower regulator and smell it to confirm that is it?
other things tied it that got fried as well? where do i look?
or should i take it to the dealer and have them check it.
besides blower regulator what is going on?
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

The blower is not in the center cluster, it is above the passenger's feet.
Since you have a cluster light on plus your other descriptions, it sounds like you might have something more than just a set of resistors in the regulator. Can't hurt to check it though. You might get lucky.

I think what fried was behind the dial that controls the speed of the blower. I probably fried something else as well.
I guess a dealer could plug it in and find out the issue right away. right?
How much would it cost to have the dealer give me as estimate of what is wrong with everything?

In Atlanta, the Buckhead stealership told me once it would be $250 for a diagnostic fee but that it would be applied to the repair if I had it done. Times are tougher for dealers, so you might be able to do better.
The Star diagnostics that the dealer has is incredibly detailed but it doesn't always pinpoint exact problems so you can still get stuck with the dealer just throwing expensive parts at the problem.
