Problem with 1999 C230, while stopped behind red light or in traffic
Hi,
My 1999 C230s engine starts to do small shakes and doesnt work smoothly behind red lights (generally speaking that happens when transmission is on Drive but the car is stopped for any reason). In other words there are some short discontinuities while engine is running. A friend of mine told me that I need to change the spark plugs and wires, but I want to make sure before I change anything.

It can be that or like in my case my MAF is going bad that's why my car is shaking. It could also be your engine mount or transmission mount. You might want to have those check first before changing your MAF which can really be a pain in the pocket.

I bought the car last year and it had 130k on it. I have not done any service yet and the mileage is 145k right now. I had to change the Crankshaft position sensor and the fuel pump (actually I changed the fuel pump for no reason because the problem was the Crankshaft sensor and not the fuel pump). Anyway, the prior owner took good care of the car and the car itself is very clean. How often the spark plugs and fuel filter need to be replaced? How about the wires?

Cleaning a MAF is possible but you need to be really careful as it is very delicate. Use a MAF cleaner and follow the instructions carefully. I also recommend that you do what C43AMG mentioned. I change my fuel filter once a year and plugs about 30,000 kilometers just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the reply. I ordered oil filter, air filter, spark plugs and wires today, so I will replace them next week and hopefully that will solve the problem. I already changed the fuel filter almost 5 months ago. Do you know (or prefer) any specific brand of MAF cleaner?

You can use Breake cleaner it works good. We use this solution here in germany.. Even the little contact innerside of the MAF is contaminated with rests of fluid film or oil or what ever so that the MAF will not work correctly..
