1999 Mercedes-Benz C230 Timing Chain and Engine gone after 84k Miles
I just bought a 99 Benz C-230 and the timing chain broke. My mechanic told me i should just get a used engine. He said even if I replace the chain there could be other things wrong with the car such as the valve hit the pistons.
But it only has 84k miles...
I can get the timing chaing installed parts and labor for $160 - $200
Used motor 110k miles parts and labor for $1000
What you guys think? Is it worth the gamble for $200 ?
Also is this a Interference Engine?

Wait the mechanic wants you to get a new motor? When you can fo a timing chain for for $200? Okkkk. This is a bit weird I must say. Go install the new timing chain and dont bother with the motor just yet. I would also try and get a second opinion on this.

I dont think getting a second opinion is feasible. I would have to tow it to another shop and pay another diagnosis. Which is gonna be about $200. I would rather just gamble with having him replace the timing chain first. But i want to hear what you guys think.

dude,
if you can spare some $$$, have your engine checked by a machine shop to test if there's some damage done to the block caused by the valve when your timing chain broke.
if the machine shop gave the block a clean bill of health, by all means; replace your chain and don't bother replacing your engine.
good luck.
let us know what happens.

Do some more research on the different MB forums to confirm your version of the M111 engine is, or is not, an interference engine. If it isn't, then the timing chain route might be worth the gamble.
