it was the mass airflow sensor

99 C280 with 115,000 miles:

I was experiencing rough idle and occasional stalling. No power on initial acceleration and then a great surge of power. Yikes!

Fuel pump and filter are new. Spark plugs are less than two years old. Transmission fluid was just replaced by a great indie shop, etc. New water pump.

Although I had replaced the MAF sensor about a year ago, it was a cheap unit and I suspected that it was failing on me. I tried the spray cleaner, etc. with no improvement.

After purchasing an OEM MAF from Autohausaz.com, the car runs great. Maybe the best in the 3 and a half years i've owned it. Near perfect idle, good power, and much smoother shifts.

The original MAF sensor was the first non-OEM part I've purchased for this car. But I've learned my lesson, only OEM parts for me from now on. Since I do my own work, I can pay a little more and get the best part.

Good luck and hope this helps someone else.

Jim
