HI Oil Light on and Flashing

Question HI Oil Light on and Flashing
A family member's '98 C280 just had the oil light come on with "HI" indicated in the trip odometer and flashing. Oil level is fine he indicated after pulling over. He also checks it twice a week since there is an oil leak somewhere toward the rear of the engine (possibly valve cover gaskets).

Does this indicate a faulty connection or malfunctioning oil level sensor?
