Loud clanking noise when running AC or Heat
Hi everyone,
Looking for some insight on how to fix the loud clanking (almost diesel like) noise that becomes apparent when I run either the AC or the Heat. The noise completely goes away as I turn off the cooling and/or heating systems.
I brought in the car to a mechanic and they mentioned that the noise looks to be stemming from the AC Compressor. They didn't specialize in work around ACs and suggested I go to the dealer to get it done properly. The dealer wants $1250 for a new AC Compressor + 3-4 hours of work. Putting the total bill at ~$1,600 + tax.
Apart from the really annoying noise, the AC blows cold as it should and the heating works.
Anyone have any insight? Would save me a ton of money.
Thanks

Since the A/C Compressor is shot the best bet would be to find a indi shop to do the work. A 98 C230 is not worth bringing to any dealer. For $1,600 that is almost half of the W202's value. Where are you located? I can find you a good indi shop and look around online for a new A/C Compressor. Ebay and AutohausAZ are good places to start.

Thanks for the reply.
Yea I hear ya. $1,600 in repairs for the unit is certainly not worth it. I just got the car too. Replaced brakes and tires so any additional costs would probably put me above the car's value.
Located in the Hamilton area in Ontario Canada though.
Is the compressor gone even though the AC seems to be working?

Swing on over to Peach Parts.com and find a indi shop in your area. That site is Very DIY kind of people and that site is more older Mercedes. When I have a W126 Issue I go to there.
