you have to remove the mirror glass first by tilting the glass down all the way and unclipping the retaining spring at the top of the mirror motor. then you have to pry the housing away from the frame.

No, you don't pry it off. Since I posted my question I discovered that you must push the mirror against its folding spring until you can see the black frame. Under the folding spring (a coil about 1/2" dia.) is a silver U-shaped sheet metal part about 3" across the open end of the U. Under the spot where the spring crosses over it is a point where a screwdriver tip may be used to push the U toward the mirror side to get tips of the U from under the wedges molded on the housing that latch over the tips and hold the housing in place. When the silver latch tips are out from under the wedges molded into the housing then the housing can be pulled off.
