c220 fuel filter backwards?

1996 c220
c220 fuel filter backwards?
Hi, I recently purchased a 1996 class c 220 Auto.
I went to replace the Fuel filter (and noticed that the Fuel pump is located Beside it) and the Hose coming from the Fuel Pump was going into the Filter (marked) Out.
I thought it should have been connected to the end that says In?
My Bosch Filter does not have in/out marked on it . It has a directional Arrow instead. I attached the Fuel pump Hose, in line with the Arrow.
Does anyone remember if the Fuel travels from the Fuel Tank --> Fuel Pump----> Filter----> Motor ?
or
Fuel Tank ---> Filter---> Fuel Pump --> Motor ?
I did the change,without raising the car,or, removing the Plastic shroud cover, so my Vision was limited to where the Hoses led.
I may have to jack it up and do a Better inspection. I was hoping someone may remember?
