Hello all. New to the group. Have a question regarding a prospective purchase on a 99 C230K.

Its got 120k miles, is clean and frankly I want it. However, the issue is that it starts and idles fine cold, then, after a bit of warming up (still in park) the idle changes to rough, the cel comes on, (codes for misfire in cylinders 2 & 4 & general misfire code). When you drive it, it is truly underpowered and missing.

The catch is this, when you attach an obdII code reader, and clear the codes (while running) the engine smooths right out, and sounds fine again for a while.

My question is this, I am assuming its truly the coil packs,(or combination of packs and plugs and wires etc) however, want the opinions of more experienced than myself. (Ive read about head issues, and the like).

The car is cheap, I really do want it, however, cant afford an engine swap or rebuild at this time.

Any advice or thoughts??

Run! There are plenty of good used Mercedes out there. Why buy one that already gives you trouble from the start?

We just purchased the exact car and had the exact problem. It turns out it was a cracked spark plug creating the misfire. Change out the plugs to stay cheap and it will work fine afterward. If you want it and can afford it, do a full tune up (plugs, coils, and wires, etc.) and you shouldn't have any issues. Enjoy! We love ours!
