flashing fuel light

So this is a weird one. Last night while driving normally my low fuel light started flashing and my check engine light came on. I have a full tank of gas so that part is eliminated, and I looked in the manual and as best I can determine it was a loose fuel cap. So I took it off and put it back on this time sure it was tight. I start the car and the flashing light is gone, but the check engine light is still there, I figure i would have to have that bit cleared by an OBDII reader, but later it came back on again. Performance is not impacted in any way i can tell, the car has been performing fine, but I'm not sure what this means. My next step is to go to autozone and have them read the code.

Do you

make a habit of topping off the tank? Instead of letting it shut off at the first click?
Inspect the cap gasket for cracks or tears,if none pry it out with a plastic knife and flip it over.
The flashing light was the cap warning, the cel will show a gross leak in the fuel system.
It should clear after a few drive cycles and as the tank goes below 3/4 full which is one of the test parameters for that part of the emissions system.

Don't erase the code just let it clear itself. Otherwise you won't know if you need a new cap and all of your I/M status monitors will be set to not ready.

Thanks, the light didn't go away after getting under 3/4 tank though. I checked the cap it's completely find although the plastic cord that connected the cap to the car is broken, it came that way. I have experienced no performance issues so I'm just ignoring it.
