Question Instrument Cluster Swap

Hey there...

while browsing on ebay i saw an instrument cluseter from the w210 E Class car and it looks remarkably similar to the cluster from the w202 models...except it has the large lcd display at the bottom of the cluster- would this work in a 1999 c class? if a comand unit were installed, would this work with the comand nav unit? i have sent steve nl an email regarding this install but I wonder if anyone else has researched and/or tried this mod? let me know!

This is before it was done.

I'll have newer pictures in a little while with the completed project.

To make the LCD display instrument cluster out of the W210 or W208 work in a W202 you need at least a multifunctional steering wheel with airbag...and some rewiring...but it can be done (on 96 and newer 202s).

swappin out stuff

so if the steering wheel was replaced--- could you change it out with a clk? (w208) with the multi-function setup?

that would be pretty sweet

and how much rewiring is required? and how expensive would this run? is it even worth doing in a 99 c230K??

Yes can be done...and yes MIGHT be worth it (I myself would definitely go for it when I had a 95+ W202)...

so the next question is ... how much?

i have seen several w210 and w208 steering wheels on ebay- without the cover and without the airbag of course... could the w202 airbag work? how much would a new airbag unit be? also how much is a cover? buttons? do the buttons for the multifunction display come with the steering wheel cover? are they seperate.? if anyone has a rough outline of the best way to do this... that would be appreciated...

thanks!

The absolute best way to do this is to hand Steve (MBenzNL) a wad of cash, and tell him "install a steering wheel, multifunction airbag, cluster, and COMAND in my W202, and make it all work together."

They go away for a little while, come back, and voila... it's done.

That's how I did it!

(OK, I did kinda have to convince him that it would work and he should figure it out... but now, he can do it with his eyes closed.)

Your old airbag is of NO use in a MF steering wheel...the new MF airbags at mercedes come WITHOUT the buttons...

I have several MF airbags in different colors in stock (most of them are new)...in case you want to do the update anywhen in the future (either yourself or have it done).
