Question engine whine

I am wondering if this is normal. When I first turn on the car in the morning or after not driving it for about 5 hours there is a very noticeable whine that comes from the engine. It is even more noticeable when driving in a parking garage. It goes away once the temp reaches 80 degrees as this is only present when the temp is below that and within the first 5 - 10 minutes of turning on the car. It's a 99 C230 with about 55k. Has anyone had anything similar happen with their car or know what is causing this or what I can do about this? Any help would be great. Thanks.

You are probably talking about the S/C whine, it is loudest when the engine is cold.

The rear differential can also whine some if the oil is old or very cold.

well, its not that cold here now, i guess i can always take it to a dealer or shop to find out. could this cause any problems? can it also have anything to do with the transmission at all, as the whine gets louder as the rpm raises, but again its only within the first 5 minutes or so.

Try leaving it in park and revving it a little, that should show you that it is in the S/C.

Let your car idle and warm up for 2-3 minutes and the whine will go away.
