tie rods?

just dropped off my car to finish the alignment and bushings from last time. The mechanic noted in the R.O. that the front "tie rods" were "heated" and may snap? What is that part? is it what holds the front two wheels together? (can that cause the lower control arm bushings to wear out fast?)

hopefully i'll get my car back today...

seriously. just got the second call as to the leaking underneathe. the rear main seal is wearing out and the pump should be replaced as well my SA told me...that job is 3 grand. then the center link is about $700...so looking around $3700 b4 taxes and such. not gonna fix it. he said with the main seal, i should be able to get another 50k miles...but the center link, if i hit a big pothole or something, that may crack. but i think i'ma just drive it till it passes on.

looking at other cars for options, maybe trade my car in for what i can get it for...

what do you guys think i should do? keep spending money on the car (almost 10 years old, with 129k miles) or drive it till it's passed on? I've spent about 5 grand in the past year just fixing this and that...maybe time for a new car?

I'd get a second quote on the job.

Once fixed the car should last quite awhile.

I agree, try an independent shop or something.

yea, the center link is messed up...worn out apparently from age. SA says if i hit a pothole or something, it may snap, great. gonna bring it to a local mechanic monday whom i've dealt with b4 to get his opinion.

sounds like you could use a new ride bro. I'd take the $3500 that you'd spend, sell your car, and you should have enough cash for a decent sized downpayment on a newer benz.

the center link costs $650 to fix (parts and labor), so if i'm going to fix anything, that would be it...don't like the idea that if i'm driving around and i hit a pothole or something and it cracks, then that's not good for safety. i'm going to leave the seeping/leak alone in hopes it will crust or something and stop leaking (as some older leaks have done this).

i drove into a parking lot the other day and heard a crack or something metal clank (i believe it was probably the center link because i had my car in for the check engine light last time and alignment and they didn't tell me this, so thats what i'm assuming started this).

definately not going to spend $3000 on the seal and pump, not worth it. that's almost what my car is worth. being a college student now, i can't afford much. when i star co-op next summer, then i'll probably look into another car, just trying to keep this one alive with minimal spending for about another year...

I had my centerlink replaced 3 months ago for $420.
When I shopped around the prices are between $420-600. The part is around $225 plus 2 hr labor approx (installation and allignment). Some shops put outrageous mark up on the part.
You should shop around.
