odometer readout
My 2000 C280, purchased used, has an odometer issue: some of the lines that make up each digit don't light. So a 7 might actually be a 0 or9, and a 0 might be an 8 (follow?) The broker I bought it from said that MB's and BMW's are notorious for this, but I don't see any posts about it. Car only has 60K on it, any ideas?

i see that all the time on cars that are rolled back on the odometer. if the digits go blank or one of the last digist illuminates dark red the odometer has been tampered with. PM me and i will let you know more-but i haven't heard of this as being chronic

Did you do a CarFax check of your vehicle to see if it was Salvaged or registered with higher milage previously? If not, you should do it now, ASAP!

thanks sph, nothing bad on the carfax report, though I did find out it was a repo, not a returned 3 year lease as I had assumed. Imagine paying 3 years of payments on a brand new Benz and letting it get repo-ed?

NO, the dealer does not hook up hook up a computer to the pins.
Need to get you stuff straight.
The dealer hooks up what we call a SDS machine.
From there I can go into the old cluster and download the information for thecluster int he SDS machine.(the information that is download has to do with setting and thing that pertain to the cluster, no the miles.)
When I order a cluster for your car, it is sent to me with the miles already uploaded into it. On newer cluster I can only raise the miles, not lower them.

Odometers in Europe
I thought someone a few months ago said MB Dealers (and others) in Europe could "adjust" Odometers with a frequency generator. Am I mistaken about this?
