1994 C280
head gasket replacement

I took my '94 C280 in to the shop cos she was leaking oil. Mechanic tells me she's leaking cos the head gasket need to be replaced.

I was quoted about $900/labor + parts.

Has anyone had to have theirs replaced and what was the cost?

$900 sounds nice....mine was about $1200 parts and labor. Headgasket problems are common on the early w202's. I believe they realized this in 96 or 97 and put in a updated gasket. Unlucky for us.

Good luck with it. Once you replace it, shouldn't give you any more problems down the road.

900??????? I wish I could get mine done that cheap. My dealer quoted me $4000 and another $600 to machine the heads. Do it before he realizes the horrible mistake of a price he gave you. Once you do it you're set for life.

Yea, unless you know the mechanic real well and he's giving you a break, shouldn't be that cheap...

Average around $1200 from posts around here...some extraordinary cases like Doug...but usually around $1200.

His estimate was approx. $900 in labor plus parts and extra if he had to machine the heads. So no, I didnt get a sweetheart estimate

When the CEL came on, it said misfire on pistons 2 and 6. Could that be due to the gasket?

did you get your head gasket job done yet??? i was wondering if they told you to machine the head??? i got quoted a tad less from euro 1 car in sd and they're using dealership parts. i guess we'll see...

this lame edit thingy not working. i just wanted add that the place is called euro 1 car. my guess is that they may have done this job before.

No I havent had the gasket replaced yet. Monies been tight lately. Worst thing about it, besides the CEL light always on, is I can feel a difference in the way she drives now.

Ive got to get this taken care of quickly.

yeah, i know how you feel. my oil leak seems to be getting worse and worse. i'm bringing it in asap. i think i read somewhere that you can get a reading for your c.e.l. at autozone for free and then you can ask your mercedes dealership what it means. or you can pay a shop $30 or mercedes a $100. i actually paid the $100 once. , but they said they will take a $100 off your bill if repaired at mercedes.

humm, yall paying a bit too much for headgaskets. machine shop here charges 150-200 to resurface the head, great place, i had my 260z head done there with aluminim weld for 180.

a mechanic here will charge around 200-300 to replace the gasket. so overall like 500. plus the gasket kit. whats that like 150?

Like I said in a previous post. Check the coil ends for the misfires. Common problem. Coil ends sit between the coil packl and the spark plug. Sympton is under hard accelerationt he car goes into limp mode or loss of power. 3 coil ends at about $10 each. Cheap very very easy DIY'er. Common problem.

Douglas, you had to machine your heads too. I did that cause the head warped. Just 5K km out of warranty. Cost me an arm and a leg.

do you know how common head warping is??? or can you actually see the warping on the head??? just asking because mine is going in mon. to change the headgaskets and want to be prepared...thanks.
