I haven't heard any C230's make "diesel" engine noises on the road or idling before. Does your car vibrate when your sitting inside? When do you hear it? All the time? sometimes?
For the most parts the N/A engines on the w202's are pretty smooth and quiet. Except for the 4 bangers at higher speeds, then your engine gets loud :p

My **** sounds like a diesel tooo. Its been like that since I had the car, I got use to it though. It makes that noise even worse when I put the air conditioning on. But when I am playing music you can here it anyways lol....

Basically, the engine doesnt sound clean. It seems to have a light diesel like sound. My mom's accord is nice and quiet...no noise. You can hear the noise when you go from Park to Drive and give it gas. Or whenever you put strain on the engine.

Could be detonation. Might be time to change the plugs. I'd try to get a mechanic to take a listen/drive and see what he/she thinks. I'm not positive, but pretty sure that your engine has knock sensors, but even so.....
