Head Unit Adaptor Question

sup y'all... it's been a minute since i've been on here... but i had a question i kinda needed help with...

i posted it in the audio/elec forum, but no answers...

In a 1998 c-280...

right now it's all stock in there...

i do have the bose amp in case it matters -

was curious as to WHICH "kit" or "adaptor" i use/buy to give to the shop that's installing it... i heard that the aftermarket (alpine or whatever) stereos sound like trash and there's a hum from all the speakers if u just try and connect... i just wanna be sure because i dont wanna get my car back from the idiots and have it sound like trash. it's no masterpiece or anything, i just wanted some info - and i searched and searched in both here and the w202 forum but can't find that thread. i 'member someone talkin about using a VW or Audi adaptor... this true??

let me know, someone, pleeease?

and let me thank u ahead of time toooooo ...

sol
--------------------------

thank u - and i miss u all and hope ur all doing beautifully . .. .

*again, thanks*

yes, for the wiring harness, you need a VW/Audi adapter.

If your going aftermarket deck, what you need is a VW/Audi dash kit, european antenna adapter and a VW/Audi wiring harness/adapter to plug and play with the old wiring from the deck.

Simple installation, good luck!

I don't think you could even try and just connect the stock wiring to the aftermarket connector, different pin layout I believe. The adapter is cheap, like $10.

I've had my deck in for 2 years now, sounds great

I'm glad I seen this. I am getting a clarion cd/mp3 player installed tomorrow. The guy said they don't make a wiring harness for your car so they are gonna make one for me...I think they might cut my stock one or something like that. As for the antenna adapter...he never said anything about it...maybe they'll charge me afterwards. I am taking it in tomorrow. Should I tell them to use a vw/audi wiring harness? What exactly should I tell him and what do I exactly need? THanks.

There's some people who say you need a signal adjuster or something like that also. Did you have to get anything like the GDawg or can it be done with just a wiring adapter? I REALLY wouldn't mind being able to hook up my Sony deck that I bought a year ago in my 95 C 280.

I'm assuming the '98 non bose setup is the same wiring as the '94 non bose setup.

What you need is a VW/Audi wiring harness, european antenna adapter (to work with the aftermarket antenna socket) and a VW/Audi dash kit.

I haven't heard of anything like that. What you do is get the Audi/VW harness and plug and play that into the factory harness for the MB radio. Then you can connect it to the back of the sony deck.

Benz916 - That is true, they don't make a harness for MB, which is why the VW/Audi one is needed. That one plugs and plays with the factory MB harness, just have to connect them up, wire for wire and it'll be fine.

Thanks for the help. Why would you need a dash kit? Wouldn't the cd player just slide right in? There doesnt seem like any rooms for a dash kit.

https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...t=audi+adaptor

I think this guy didn't use a dash kit. Hit me back guys...soon. I am taking it in tomorrow.

the dask kit is needed because the aftermarket isn't the same size as the stock HU. Also, it's on different railing system, so what the factory deck slides out on won't fit the aftermarket one, therefore the dash kit has the right railing and clips to fit it.

Just to be sure, there is no wire cutting involved with the VW/Audi harness, right?

I got the clarion cd/mp3 player installed by Fry's electronics. They only used the audi wiring harness and the antenna adapter. My brother took the car in so I am not fully sure why he didnt use the dash kit, but it fits perfect. Sound is pretty good, but the stock speakers are pretty weak. Looks like I might be changing the speakers soon.

It sounds better...for sure. But I would still like it to be louder. MP3 player is awesome.

quick question though GDAWG - i am pretty sure i do have the bose amp setup - is this gonna be any different - or do i just get those 3 components:

1. the adaptor for the antenna (euro)
2. the vw/audi plug/play wiring harness adaptor
3. the dash kit

thanks soooo much again and sorry if this is a knucklehead question. . . appreciate allll your help.

much love

and happy mothas day to any mothas out there

whoops...sorry man. Completely missed the reply somehow.

regardless, you do need those three components to set in the new deck to make it work, but with the BOSE system, there's a factory BOSE amp in the right rear of the trunk, behind the liner i believe. You need a component to bypass that amp or you may get bad sound out of the speakers (what someone told me)...but I forgot what you need to bypass the amp.

I think someone on this forum has done the BOSE bypass....see if you can find it in the old posts?
