Front of engine noise

CLK 230
Front of engine noise
230 CLK year 2000,with 190 k miles on the clock,and MB serviced. Noises are always difficult,but looking at engine from front, a grinding/grating noise is coming from the front left hand side. Does not appear to be from external,belt driven ancilliary components. Is this a "classic", or well recognised M111 2,3 litre problem? If so what is the cure?
