check around on some electronics forums.... often times you can use or slightly modify the existing hands free kit to use with a newer digital phone. it's never more complicated though that etching a circut board from radio shack and maybe running a wire or two.... look around, it's out there.

Aftermarket phones
I've been trying to deal with the same issue on my 1999 C280 Sport. The dealer says you can't even upgrade the phone to a Timeport or V60. The best alternative I've seen so far is to have a Cellport 3000 voice command/handsfree kit put in. It sells for $250 but has to be professionally installed. You don't get the integrated radio use, but its better than nothing.

the cell kits aren't tough to install. about the same difficulty as switching the head unit or something to that order. you just need the diagrams so that you know what to wire where. you can also wire an aftermarket kit into the speakers and to the head unit so that you maintain the mute feature. it's really not that complicated but specific instructions differ by kit.
