FIXED! - M104 idle "hunting" and missing.
Just wanted to share my luck with the rest of the MBWorld members.
Hopefully I'm not typing this thread "too soon", but I believe I found the idle problem I was having with my 1996 C280.
After replacing the head gasket I got her running, but noticed an occasional "miss" at idle. The miss goes away above 1500-2000 rpm. I checked the coils, plug wires, grounds, fuses, already installed new plugs, cleaned the intake valve (butterfly?) and replaced battery cables. But, still had the problem.
Then I noticed a bunch of CRAP under the ECM in the right component bay. So I removed the bracket that holds the ECM and cruise controller to clean the crap away. Here's what I found...........
Upon further research, I found out that this cruise controller is also the idle speed controller. (I had no idea.) Cleaned the corrosion off of the connector and the unit itself. Decided to open up the unit to inspect for further damage. luckily there was none, but I did find some cold solder joints going to the connector receptacle. re-flowed solder and reinstalled. I did reset the ECM's memory with my OBD scanner. Started her up and she idles perfectly! Slow or fast acceleration runs just fine. Test drive proved it.
I do owe thanks to this forum for the "usual" list of items to inspect when having idle issues. I guess now we should include the idle speed controller as another item to check.
Now if I can just get this DAMN SPEEDOMETER to work again.
Thanks,
Jammer.

Nice to hear you got that solved. Question, what did you use to clean that mess? rpms dropping to nearly 0, sometimes to the point of stalling, can it be the same origin of the problem?

I used a scotch pad and some cleaner to remove the corrosion. Then a small wire brush to clean the pins carefully. Your idling problem may be related. Don’t forget to check your plugs, wires, coils, etc.
