Griots Oil Extractor

Ok, it seems like a handy tool, but how can you tell that ALL of the used oil has been sucked out, are there measurements on the side of it?? Can it even hold 8 qts. of oil?

you won't be sure. there will always be a few drops left, or if you have the tube in the incorrect position, there may be a lot left. just do it the old fashion way and pull the plug

I use the Griots extractor. The first time I used it I wondered how much more oil may be in the pan.

So, I pulled the drain plug. Less than an ounce came out !
(1 oz)
The extractor works VERY VERY well !

I thought of something else- What about the copper washer for the drain plug that comes with the oil filter? That would never get replaced with the oil extractor

Correct. No need to replace the crush waser unless you remove the drain plug.

So, the washer only needs to be replaced if it is removed? Otherwise it stays seated and ok? It just seems like if they supply it with the filter, it should be changed regularly...

Correct. The washer only needs to be replaced if you loosen the drain plug. They suppy the washer with the filter in case you prefer to do a bottom drain method.

I use the griots extractor and it's really really nice. Definitly worth it. No worry about removing the drain plug.

It holds about 8 quarts. I need to stop near the end and empty about a quart out.

The good thing about the Griots extractor is that it has an automatic shutoff if it start to fill to the top. It will not overflow and has a handy pour spout for emptying.

where can I get a cheap one online?

I'm interested... where's a good website to get one for a decent price... I hate crawling under a lowered C280.

I use the Topsider MVP. Works great so far. I used it for 4 oil changes.
Got it from Boat US for around $45.

I also ordered the brake line kit so I can bleed my brakes with it. You can order the brake line kit separatly to fit the large oil extractor.

Just ordered...

Thanks...

I just ordered the one from groitsgarage (I like the idea of 8 quarts)... $65+$13 (shipping) =$78. It'll pay off w/ the time saved.

The mityvac is a better/cheaper product. I've owned both and i replaced my griots model which leaked after 5 years of use with a mityvac 7400. They look really similar but the mityvac is thicker and holds an extra liter(7.5 versus 6.5) is made a little more durable (thicker casing) and can be found for $49 dollars online.

2006 e500
8.8 liter oil extractor

Just received the below oil extractor and it is the larger version of the Mityvac line. Haven't used it yet because our 2006 e500 is on the boat and our "97 e320 has been sold. Eager to use it and seems of high quality and one can pump out the oil from the container as opposed to pouring it out. I end up putting the oil it in a five gallon pail which top has never been pried off, so it's a clean affair. Before this new extractor, I used a Harbor Freight knockoff of the "Topsider" which was cheap and a piece of trash and then went down under and used a Fumoto valve with a length of plastic tubing that worked fine. Cost for the Mityvac was $76 with shipping from Automotive Tools.com

Fluid Evacuator (Mityvac: model 7201)

Fluid Evacuator
  • No power required, creates vacuum and pressure
  • Ability to evacuate and dispense most automotive liquids and chemicals.
  • External pump design
  • Large capacity 8.8 liter fluid reservoir
  • Automatic flow control prevents overfilling
  • Pressure relief valve for safety
  • Durable polyethylene construction will not rust or corrode
  • Dip stick tube included for engine oil removal
