My muffler recently broke off at the weld that joins the pipe. The local muffler shop says it can’t be fixed. I know in Europe there are many affordable options for replacement mufflers but I can’t find any in North America. Anyone have a good suggestion?

As an option, have you looked into the pick n' pulls in your area?
You should be able to find a suitable low cost oem replacement.

If there was less snow on the ground I would consider doing this. The other issue is finding a unit that is in decent shape. Most C230 in my area are seriously affected by salt and corrosion. I found a company in England and one in Sweden that make replacement units at a reasonable cost. The issue then is shipping.

Im thinking of measuring the space available and looking for any muffler for a 2.3L engine. I could just weld extra brackets where I need them.

Unfortunately I don't believe there are any aftermarket replacements. You can still get OEM parts from companies like the following:

Since these are OEM, they're quality parts, if expensive. I received mine from Mercedes Parts Center and it was a genuine Mercedes part. At least one of the above companies should ship to Canada.
