Trunk lid release on console

Trunk lid release on console
This one should be easy (for someone) but I'm from another world (BMWs).
Wife's 1998 C280 console mounted trunklid release doesn't work. It will release using the key fob. I believe (correct me?) that the trunk release is electrical, not vacuum operated. I know the vacuum activation on driver's door lock is bad, I can hear it hiss when locking/unlocking. Except that the fan speed is dependent on engine speed, the vacuum activated stuff still works and I don't want to go into the dash after that one.
I RTFM and know that depending on whether the central locking was last activated using the fob, the interior trunk lid release may not work. I think I tried all the permutations of fob and central locking while waiting for her to come out of the grocery store and pulled up the trapezoidal fake wood panel holding the window switches, surrounding the shifter, etc. I see all the switches are routed to two little plugs, one with six small diameter wires, the other two plug has two equally small wires. That the wires are small leads me to expect they just activate a relay somewhere, but I expect the relay is okay since the fob can still release the trunklid (correct me?).
Some pair of these wires should activate the trunklid release, but which pair, by colors? I may have to disconnect/remove the switch, don't want to do that just yet if someone can advise me better.
Edit: Just noticed today that the red console switch indicator light comes on when the trunk is open, regardless of how opened. So at least that part of the switch is working, though the switch seems not to be.
