Gas Guage Phenomenon

So when i fill up my tank all the way, it seems that the tank is zero and even shows the orange warning light.

But when i use some of the gas it will go away and goto 7/8 tank reliably.

Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks

Sanny

Yep...I had the same problem. Every time i filled up, the gas guage would read empty.
I had to bring it back to the dealer and they tore apart my gas tank to get to the float. I was trying to read that data sheet the service guy gives to you telling everything the mechanic did. Said they tested pin 9 to pin 4...removed tank...replaced float....replaced tank...hell, i think they replaced the entire fuel line, gas tank, electrical wires all leading to the guages! It was still under warranty thank god! I hope yours is too...

out of warrranty unfortunately. its almost as if the float gets like pushed down when there is little air, and when the fuel level goes down it goes up to the air?

crappy theory i know... but i think about these things somewhat...

I am not really sure what difference it makes to you if othre people have had this problem. If you're looking for a solution, you should do a search in this forum... I think it's been pretty well covered, and what you may need to do! Good luck with it.

If you need help with how to do a search, threre's a sticky post in the W203 forum that will help you out.

Definitely the float device.... My other friend with a 2000 c class had the same problem and the tank costed about $400 (Parts only) to replace. He tells me that the float is part of the tank....

I noticed that the original poster has a 2000 c class too....hmm

There are two fuel senders and you can get them separate from the tank. There is a special tool to replace them and it helps to have the correct tool.

In some cases, people also need to replace the instrument cluster. Not sure why, but sometimes it is necessary.

But then again, if you search here in the forum, you can find a bunch of old discussions about it and possible resolutions.

dear sanny,

these cars have a nasty float. I have two of them, and one was doing the same. Had it replaced two weeks ago the total cost was less than $400 parts and labor.

Since you are in the Los Angeles Area, contact Kim or Tony at Henry's Auto repair in Whittier, @562 693 1036
you will not be dissapointed

Suhail

Thanks Everyone for the replies. The guage problem has not come back yet, (I haven't filled up since), but I will let everyone know....

I have a 99 c class and my parents have a 98, same problem. I have a friend that has a 98 clk, same problem. Someone once theorized that it had something to do with the gas(specifically mtbe) that may disrupt the sensor. I don't know if this is true and sounds strange. But in the last few months with consisted fillups at shell(no longer with mtbe) mine has only had the problem a few times and even then it only lasts for a few miles. Just a thought.

um... the gas gauge thing happened to me once, but i just simply used brute force, banged the instrument cluster and the needle went back up again....

Unreliable Gas Gauge

I have a 1995 C280, recently, the Gas Gauge was on the fritz. It would read Full reliably upon fill-up, and would proceed this way until the gauge hit 1/2. From there, it would consistently drop to empty, and we were forced to gauge gas using the odometer. I took it to the shop and they replaced the fuel line, i believe (this was a few months ago) and it hasnt malfunctioned once since.
