c280 cel & diagnosis

I have a 99 c280. 95k miles on it. CEL has been on for some time initially with no problems. Now it is missing upon acceleration with poor performance. Will drive fine if you cut engine off and restart but eventually will do same thing if you accelerate hard.

Shop advises multiple codes and that it needs rt rear o2 sensor, right front o2 sensor and mas meter(presume this is the air flow meter?). Cost around $900 with labor. Seems a little steep. $400 I guess for the mas and $100 each on the sensors? Labor seems high. what are your thoughts? Ho whard ad what is entailed in the sensors and mas replacement?

Regards

David

save your dough and just get a mass meter and DIY

dsjw1,

From my experience... no need to do all that. Just change the air mass meter aka air flow meter can get the check engine light reset. It's a quick 5 min DIY (do-it-yourself). It's only $280 on bimmerzone.com

If you're lucky, I see it on eBay now and then for like $70-265.

Good Luck,

hello dsjw,
i can vouch for what timecop said, i had the same problem on my car, i went to the dealer to have my air mass meter replaced, my car had the same symptoms as what you described. they seem to be a weak point in the c class, very narrow parameters, the 400 dollar estamate is correct from your dealer. my car was throwing the code for fuel trim right bank, i tried everything i could think of to fix it, 400 bucks for a little plastic tube with a bunch of electronic crap in it sounded like a rip off , but the car is back running as strong as ever, no regrets. if the code for o2 sensors is going off the dealer will want to repace them. those are high dollar items too. they are almost a hundered bucks a peice from autozone on my car. good luck with your car. oh.... before you go to replace it try spraying it with carb or throttle body cleaner that says "no residue" maybe it will clean it out enough to work, keep your fingers crossed while spraying. probaby won't help but it's worth a shot.

you could learn a lot (more than you want to know) by searching the forums for CEL, MAF, AMM, MAS. Caveat Emptor: you'll find AMM's on ebay, but you never know how old they are (I just paid $49 for one that seems okay, but an earlier purchase was not). I saw a great article on MB engine diagnostics HERE, a little technical, but worth a read. blackmercedes posted some great advice on another forum ("other forum"): change your air filter often. It's crap that gets by your dirty filter that fouls your AMM that, in turn, messes with your fuel/air mix, etc.
13benz, I've seen the carb cleaner tip on the "other forum" also, as well as electrosonic jewelry cleaner(!), one of which I might try on my old AMM if I ever need another one.

Change your MAs and see what happens. O2 sensors rarely go bad. THe MAs is a easy change. I just changed my MAS and I timed it. 16 1/2 minutes from the time I opened the hood to the time I shut it. The stealership wanted two hours labor and 400 for the part.
