1999 c280 help for a newbie

Hey guys. I am brand spankin new to this forum. I am looking to acquire a 1999 c280 from a friend of mine. But first, i want to know the problems i should look for and the questions to ask. Like what maintanence should it have had and that kinda stuff. Also, what should i look for when I go check it out myself?

Thanks

patrick

Check the Vehicle Service Book to see if all the maintenance has been done, i.e. brakefluid flush, coolingsystem flush, etc.
Secondly, I would advise you to pay a good M-B mechanic to check it out.
May cost you $ 100.00, but could save you many times that, if there is anything serious wrong with the car.

Hey Whiteboy, Welcome to the board.
I agree with what meanie said. Make sure that you aren't paying too much for the car to start with. you can get a pretty good deal on one. Check around a little before you jump. keeping a benz running is just a little more expensive in my expereince than the average car. but then agian it isn't an average car. Regular maintanance and good driving habits are the difference between one that is wore out at 100,000 and one that is clean with 200,000+ on the clock and more to go. Check to see that the engine bay isn't excessively dirty, you know oil all over everything, it's pretty new it shouldn't be super nasty if your buddy took good care of it. i would look over the body real good too. busted plastic on these things can run into $$$. If you do buy it. my advice is keep the fluids, oil and air filter changed. These are reliable cars if they are serviced reguarly. having a MB mechanic look at it is worth it if it cost you 200, transmissions and engines, and the steering assembly are not cheap. Good Luck

Welcome WB

I buy teenage MB's exclusively. Here's what I look for: Dirty engine, dirty oil, burning smells lack of records, general maintenance and recently replaced parts: but most of all I use my ears.

If something sounds funny, have someone look at the car or take a look yourself. If it sounds wrong, it probably is wrong

Change the fluids, keep road salt off of it ( Northern States) and drive it every day.

Good luck
