What are you trying to accomplish w/ EC mode? All it does is turn off the A/C compressor, so EC means "economy" mode. The fan still runs. "AUTO" can be on or off. When you press EC the LED will light. It will take a few minutes for the cold air from the compressor to stop -- it doesn't shut off immediately. If you leave "AUTO" on, it will still control fan speed and air direction. When I use EC, I usually have the windows open, so I turn off "AUTO" and lower the fan speed so it doesn't kick up higher and higher trying to cool the cabin.

If you are trying to shut off the whole thing, it depends if you have C230/240, or C320. With C230/240, just turn the manual fan speed dial to "0". For the C320, you have to press the fan lower button several times until the fan finally shuts off.

You should get better gas mileage because you are not running the AC, so you are correct.

I used EC for the first time on a trip to Montreal last week. Once interior temp seemed stabile, I set the system to rec and ec....the gas milage jumped to 35.5mpg @ 74mph (cruise control)....up from 32.4mpg at the same speed. Engine revs went down slightly, but not enough to ake an audible difference (maybe 50-100rpm?).
Turning the AC back to Auto when we hit Albany traffic stepped gas mileage back down to ~32mpg....but I averaged 34.6 for the entire trip.

See Garage
At this time of year, I use EC mode to commute to work in the mornings. On my C320, I open the RR window 4 inches, I tilt-up the sunroof, and I get a very nice circulation in the car to complement the dash vents. Works great in the mornings, but I have to use A/C at lunch or the afternoon commute home.

Upon arriving at home each night (A/C is on), I engage EC as I park the car in the garage, so it's ready for the next morning. To engage, I turn the "Auto" switches to each side of the display to disengage Auto-climate control mode and direct air to the dash vents (9:00 position). Then, I press the EC button, leaving the fan in Auto position.

I get close around 24.5-25.5 mpg in the mornings with EC mode... around 20.5-22 mpg in the evenings with A/C on. 17 mile commute each way.

By mid July, it'll be A/C all the time, I'm sure.

On long trips (highway) using A/C doesn't affect the mileage that much (28 mpg).

Did you see my earlier post? You should be able to turn on EC whether "AUTO" is on or off. However, if "AUTO" is off and EC is on, and you press "AUTO" again, EC will be turned off since the system will be returned to its normal automatic function which includes A/C compressor engaged.

OK, riddle me this one then, all-powerful Oz...

I can keep the ec and auto both on, which I guess will mean that the system will try to get the desired temp, but if it's 80 degrees outside and I've got the temp set to 70, it'll keep blowing air from the outside at max speed without ever stopping? Is that the infinite loop that you'd be stuck in? Is that correct?

Sounds weird to the MB dual zone confused

I wonder if the AUTO system can measure the temperature of the air it's blowing and will stop blowing if the outside temperature is warmer than the interior setting.

Mine stays on regardless if I have it set to auto or manual, however it seems to take 10 to 15 min before the cold air stops.

Yes, that's right. Some people are confusing "AUTO". AUTO means automatic control of air direction and fan speed. AUTO has nothing to do w/ the compressor (i.e., generation of cold air), except the initial default of pressing AUTO is to disengage EC if set. EC button controls compressor, like the "AC" button found on most other cars. The air temperature regulation part of the system is always active, regardless of AUTO or EC on or off, get it? To me, it doesn't make sense to use AUTO and EC except in winter when you really don't need the compressor. (Actually, if it's cold enough, the compressor won't engage even though EC is off) In summer, if you set EC and AUTO, the fan will probably start going faster and faster since it thinks it is not cooling sufficiently, so I always turn off AUTO w/ EC. Make sense?
