Ashtray Replacement?

Does anyone know of an aftermarket storage compartment that fits in the sapce where the ashtray goes? All I use it for is storing coins and I know a lot of cars have an optional felt-lined storage compartment instead of an ashtray. I have a hard time getting my big hand up in the ashtray to pull out the coins because ot the metal lip that is up front. I suppose I could just take the ashtray out and use the dead space instead. Just thought I would ask.

Are there a lot of you that are smoking in your car?

Contact Steve (MBenzNL.com) and ask him about the ashtray delete. It's a Euro Spec option that's just what you're looking for. I have it on my 208.

I bought a pre-'05 ashtray housing for $50 from my dealer and installed it in my car. They are an exact exchange except for the door. I just moved the door from my '05 ashtray housing and put it on the pre-'05 housing. The pre'-5 housing doesn't have the lighter, so you just have a big empty space w/ a removeable ashtray. I coverted mine to hold an XM Roady2. Since I lost the built-in lighter, I spliced in a 1-into-2 lighter plug adapter into the wires going to the original lighter and set the plugs in my armrest storage area.

So does the '05 have a cigarette lighter in the ashtray? Did they remove the cig lighter from the center console?

If anyone has swaped a 04 ashtray for an 05, where did you get the 12V for the power?

Jedcred, in '05 MB moved the cig lighter to the ashtray. If you want an '05 ashtray in your pre-'05 W203, you can just tap into the power going to the original lighter. You missed out though! I sold my '05 ashtray housing w/ built-in lighter on eBay a month or 2 ago. It got around $20.

That "ashtray delete" option is interesting, but there is just something strange about a car w/ no ashtray whatsoever. I guess there is still one on the bottom/rear of the center console

cars without an ashtray

Before I got my benz, I had a '97 honda civic ex and at that time the ashtray was an option the car did not come with. The lighter was replaced with a power outlet. Since I don't smoke, I was glad there was no ashtray. I find now that the ashtray in my c230 is a good fit for an ez pass tag. that way i don't have it hanging on the windshield and hold it up when I need to.

First pic is the two cig. lighter plugs installed in center armrest storage area that make up for the single OEM cig. lighter I had to eliminate by going back to a pre-'05 ashtray assembly. One of the cig. lighters is used to power the Roady2.

Hey Jim, what did you use to mount it to the ashtray surface? The mount that came with my Roady sits to high and not at the proper angle to close the ashtray door.

Thanks

I've been too lazy to actually mount the Roady2. It's just setting there

That's what I would do, if I hadn't already stolen that connector for +12V for my radio . You wouldn't happen to know of a Y adaptor for that three-prong cable, would you?

You see, I took out my cig lighter for my radio, but I really need the cig just in case I need to inflate the spare tire. I was thinking if there were a device that would convert from alligator clips to a cig lighter plug (for direct use off the battery), I'd get that, but I haven't found anything like that anywhere. Have you ever heard of such a converter?

if you never plan on using the ashtray, you can take the silver metal lining off. i did for my car. it's pretty easy to take off: just pry open the tab underneath the tray (you can even put it back on later if you want to).

Does anyone know if I could fit a single din headunit where the ashtray is? I have a 2002 sedan. I recall seeing someone do it, but i did a search and could not find it.

Ashtray Delete

I do like the look of that ashtray delete. Right now that's just a useless space in my car.
