35mpg on my trip home...

Today I drove home from MI to NJ with the coupe and I averaged 35mpg. I was cruising at ~65mph because the PA cops pulled me over last time for 70 in a 65, I wasn't taking any chances. I hit construction along the way but according to the display i was 54mph and 34.7mpg for 243 miles (leg 2 of the trip) when I took a pic. I wont be able to upload the pic till I get home. I hit 35.8mpg a bit later on.

The first leg of the trip (I needed to stop and sleep after 6 hours because I had my dog with me) I was going through MI and OH and was able to hit 115, averaging about 85, with 28-29mpg...still very respectable. It seems the coupe bleeds gas over 75.

Anyway, I was able to get the range from 500-600 miles...not bad for a car like that. I am very impressed. I made this trip in January with my GF's new Prius and it averaged 35mpg...and it's a hybrid.

nice! i drove 12 hours yesterday, over 300 miles. most of them were with 1BADSLK an SLK 55 that was driving along with me. i filled up my gas in the morning and so did he, by the end of the day i was down 1/4 tank and he was near empty. i think i was getting about 22mpg average but that was in all different conditions, highway, street, city, etc. 22mpg for NYC driving is awesome.

After reading this thread I got curious about what kind of gas mileage these cars really can get. Yesterday I was getting 36.8 mpg going 92 mph with the AC running. That was only for a few miles but I think it's still cool.

29 mpg mixed driving during the week in the summer

I have seen up to 33 mpg all highway at 75mph or so.
In the winter I am lucky to get 25mpg. Must be the cold and the winter formulation of the gas.

From the sounds of this, all of you are gathering your mileage info. from the MFD (perhaps with the exception of Jkw). The difference between the MFD and the actual mileage you get (miles driven divided by number of gallons placed in vehicle) are very wide with me.

I rarely get above 24mpg with mixed city and highway driving, while the MFD reads much higher.

I've checked the mileage useing the MFD and Old school method, MFD tends to give slightly higher results, But I've never noticed that much of a difference.

The MFD is quite accurate.

2002 C230K Coupe & 2005 C230 SS
I fill up the tank about every 360 miles which equates to 24mpg based upon the 15 gallons I usussally put in. For my everyday drives , which are generally urban (stop – start and 8 miles each way to work) this is very repeatable. When I have to travel down to Jupiter 166 miles each way of interstate driving a tank full lasts about 450 miles (or 30mpg), again very repeatable. This is for a 2002 C230 Coupe. In Germany driving my 2005 C230 SS (which still hasn’t arrived at my dealership) I seemed to be getting better mileage, but that might be attributable to using higher octane fuels than available in the US or the fact that I was still running it in.

2005 C320 4Matic stats

drove from boston to nyc earlier tonight, 200 miles. MPG peeked at 27.3 (with cruise control). in the end 26.8 miles per gallon (cruise control on for about 25% of the way)... ESP off the whole ride.

drove back from nyc to boston, 100 miles with ESP off, 100 miles with ESP on. MPG about the same. With ESP, MPG peaked at 27.7.

the error in the accuracy of the MFD results from the fact that it starts calculating mileage with an initial value of 25mpg, and then adjusts from there. well, at least that's what it does on the 230. if the MFD were to start calculating from 0mpg, which would be the correct value at start (using gas but not going anywhere), the numbers would be much more on point. but even so, the MFD has been within 3% of actual mileage for me.

I put gas in the car the night before. I started it up that morning and pulled right onto the highway. I live 0.9 of a mile from the highway...the mpg was accurate. Within a mile of my house I was at 70mph or higher for 6 hours straight.

right, if you're going directly to a freeway, or sepnd most of your time on one, the mfd will be more accurate, because at those speeds you do achieve the mileage it begins calculations at. if you're like me and have to sit in stop and go traffic for 10 miles everyday, the mfd gives a higher mileage than what you actually get.

i just drove around 165 miles or so and was able to average around 33 to 34 mpg, the peak of which that i saw was 34.5 mpg and the average mph (and what seemed to be the sweetspot for me) was 69 mph. this was with the sedan loaded up with stuff i had brought home for the long weekend.

i also experimented with turning the AC off and just putting the sun roof on tilt. this seemed to affect my mpg only minimally (about 0.1-0.3 mpg) and wasn't worth the discomfort of the hotter air.

The sweetspot for my 05 C320 4matic was between 60-62 mph, I hit 28mpg. Oddly enough at 65mph, effeciency is horrible: computer was reporting less than 23mpg. At 70mph, I have now regularly hit 27mpg. These numbers are based on 5 bos-nyc-bos trips of 200 miles each leg.

I also tried A/C on/off, ESP on/off, cruise control on/off: negligible impact. Just need to try and maintain constant speed.

The sunroof being open though was a noticeable factor but I didn't keep track of the numbers on this one.

Is there no way to monitor the instantaneous MPG without constantly resetting the "since start" menu? I would think this is something the computer is processing all the time to show the distance remaining screen...and if this is the case, why aren't we allowed to see it??

I got 30.0 MPG btw Philly-NYC-Philly over the weekend, but couldn't figure out a way to see actual MPG on the NJ turnpike at ~ 77 mph without resetting the whole trip.

I get about 28.6mpg cruising at 100mph. Total distance 200 miles.
I don't find much difference if I drive slower at around 85mph.

My worst fuel consumption is around 14.6mpg during traffic crawls.
