Australian C180's Vs. US C230's

Hey,

I'm interested in a C180 in Australia, the 2004/05 Model but I was interested since ive started reading that the US C230 is the bottom model is also a 1,796CC, in line 4, supercharged, as is the C180, yet the performance figures are rather different, for instance the 0-60mph (0-100kmh) speed the C230 is 2.4 seconds quicker at 7.5 seconds compared to 9.9 for the Aussie C180.

http://www.mercedes-benz.com.au/fram...sp&query=empty

Why is this so? Different engine / Newer version? Different supercharger? If it is not a different engine do you think it would be possible to mod the C180 to get the same levels of C230 performance out of it?

Thanks alot

must be the right-hand drive... lol... just kidding.

Aus C180 is listed at 143HP ... so I am assuming no charger.

US C230 is listed at 189HP

The AU site does list the c180 as having a supercharged engine. The difference is apparently in the engine configuration, though the specifics of what that means has never been made completely clear to me (at least where I've been reading).

The engine that came in the 02 coupe here in the US was indeed a 2.3L, but then they changed it to a 1.8L with comparable HP and torque, so the badge became a "power meter" rather than a displacement figure. I would guess that it has to do with the bore, stroke, or something like that (I can't compare the figures as I couldn't find that info on MBUSA). However, it is important to note that the c180 has a compression ratio of 10:1, whereas the c230 has a compression ratio of 8.7:1. That can certainly be a factor.

Also, the AU site doesn't list where in the power band the car has 143 hp, which is a bit odd. I wonder if MBUSA "stretches" the figure by giving the max HP at a certain RPM, whereas the AU site give a more median figure for HP. Could make a difference.

here in UK we have 3 models all with 1.8 kompressor engines all with identical bore/stroke and displacemant
c180 c200 and c230 but different compression ratios
i drove a 180 and 200 and couldnt tell the difference and bought the 180
seem a rip off to charge a diference of £3645 ($6866) for virtually the same engine!!

I can answer this one

I own a C200 Kompressor 2005.

for 2003+

C180 -> 1.8 litre -> 10.x:1 Compression ratio -> 4psi boost -> 143 hp
C200 -> 1.8 litre -> 9.x :1 Compression ratio -> 4-2-1 header with cat -> 7psi? boost -> 16x hp
C230 -> 1.8 litre -> 8.x:1 compression ratio -> 4-1 header with cat -> 11? psi boost -> 189-192 hp

Here they don't sell teh 230 cuz if they did nobody would buy the 240 ... MB saudi arabia has always kept out cars that would be confusing or very close eachother in specs

here's the catch, according ot a member on another message board (going by the name Kleeman ) and because of his association with kleemann (sales rep) his word is trust worthy ... he said this :

posted by kleeman 12-23-2004

"As seemingly odd as it sounds (I was skeptical myself, and what does THAT tell you) its true.
The C180, C200 and C230 are all the same engine, output varies by boost level and ECU settings.
The C180 must be some clever EU product placement poster child- the power is serverely limited,
as is the C200. Essentially one can make a C180 produce C230 power with ECU tuning only.
Ive seen the reults first hand- still ask KLEEMANN UK to back it up, never any harm in that as
you will get the results claimed.

This is why kleeman's kbox boosts the C180 up to stock C230 hp figures. However this kbox is now discontinued (as per an email i sent out last week to kleemann usa nad kleemann.dk).

I think america only offers the C230.

-Hope this helped some

-nuke

(cliff notes:

Yes it is the same motor
But unless we figure out an ECU swap or find an good chip,then no all you're going to be stuck with is the stock claimed hp +10% at most.)

PS: ignore MB's stupid advertised 0-60. They advertise the C230 here at high 8s or low 9s i forget. Which is obviously not what the members here are reporting/measuring ...

MB is just being conservative with their acceleration figures cuz obviously weight varries alot depending on options. And then again there's the whole 6speed vs 5 speed.
