SRS - Sensory Restraint System Malfuntion

So I'm driving my 05' C230 SS on the highway yesterday and outta the blue I get an SRS System failure and a pretty angry car... beeping at me and telling me to drive it to the nearest workshop.

I call up Mercedes roadside assistance who recommends I drive the car to the safest place I can wait for a tow since my airbags "may or may not deploy" in the event of a crash. I ask where they are going to tow it to. They say a dealership, so I tell them I'll just drive to it since its only 10 miles away.

I live in CT and the closest dealer to where I was at the time was Hartford. FYI - if you live in Connecticut goto the Mercedes in Hartford they are the best I have dealt with so far.

Anyway they look at the car and a gyro sensor has failed in the steering column. I'm told all airbags are functioning fine, save the driver side one. Great. The part is on express order and should be here tomorrow, but until then I'm driving around without airbags.

Has anyone else had this problem? I'd also recommend others get thier cars checked as well.

SRS = Supplemental Restraint System

as in supplementing your primary restraint system (seat belts)

I've had an SRS failure on our ML due to a bad seat sensor. The system is fairly complex, what with all the sensors they've got hooked up to it, and if anything fails, the car will warn you and switch on the SRS light. Don't worry about it too much - they'll fix it and you'll be on your way.

Remeber, your dad drove around at 100 mph without any seatbelts in a badly handling car on skinny tyres and no crumple zones.

You're ok. I don't think you had to take it to the dealer right when the error came on screen. You could have probably took it in a month from now and nothing would have went wrong IMO.

Search the forum for SRS. Several similar problems:

From my post in the above thread:

They had to replace the horn contact spiral in my car.

Are you sure he wasn't referring to the IGNORE feature on here?
