Georgia Tint Law

The state legislature of Georgia is stupid...that is a fact. A week or so ago they passed a law specifying the tint on the side of your car has to be at least 32%. My friend has tint that is much darker than that and got a warning as he was driving from Georgia to Florida (he was pulled over in South Georgia and told the cop he was passing through because he has a Florida plate). I bought my car in Florida and the dealer included 20% tint all around, and I'm moving to Atlanta (Dunwoody) in a few weeks...but my job could bring me to more rural parts of the state. Is there any reason for me to pay to have the sides tinted to 35% before I move, or should I see if I get a warning (I have a Florida plate so I can use the same excuse, then fix it there if it happens)? I'm thinking there's a chance it could be repealed, and in the city, I don't think cops go around with light meters to check tint. I just don't understand how neighborhing states have such differing tint allowances when it's a permanent feature to your car.

You have to have a minimum tint???? Does someone in the Georgia legislature own a monopoly in tinting outfits????

You're actually pretty lucky since here in California it's illegal to have ANY tint applied to the driver's or passenger side front window (with the exception factory tint on new cars). It really depends on the cop patroling the area, therfore, I wouldn't have it done just yet to got down to 35%.

Actually, the 32% tint law was in effect in Ga. from '91 - '04. It was overturned in '04 because it was deemed "unfair" since it only affected Ga. car owners, not "everyone". They re-wrote it to include everyone, including YOU.

Are you stating that GA wrote a law that is to affect all, including tourists? I got a feeling that won't hold up in court once challenged. Could one look at it and think that the South is rising again.

"(ATLANTA) - Governor Sonny Perdue has signed House Bill 20 which reinstates Georgia's window tint law on motor vehicles. Colonel Bill Hitchens, commander of the Georgia State Patrol, said the law became effective Monday, May 2, with the signature of Governor Perdue. The Georgia State Patrol will be issuing educational warnings during the month of May. He said troopers will begin issuing citations on June 1.

Georgia's window tinting law was struck down as unconstitutional last year because the provisions applied only to vehicles registered in Georgia. "House Bill 20 corrected the language so the law applies to all vehicles, whether registered in Georgia or another state," Colonel Hitchens said. "The window tint law is a safety issue, not only for law enforcement officers as they approach a vehicle during a traffic stop, but also for drivers so they can better see approaching vehicles while they drive."

HAHA....so if you're not registered in Georgia, you could get a ticket?! Apparently Georgia has a safety issue because 20% is just fine for Florida... thanks Jim for showing why this is rediculous. I don't consider myself to be lucky to be allowed to have tint - car interiors get hot and people should be able to tint their windows for that reason. I think tint laws should at least be regional.
