Intercooler Question

hey, guys, i'm young and new to this so pardon any ignorance, it'll be fixed.......eventually. does anybody have the dimensions for the current intercooler and/or a diagram/sketch of it's position relative to other parts under the hood of a C230K? I'm trying to get a quote from Spearco on an intercooler but I need a sketch and dimensions, and unfortunately, I have neither. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's about 22" wide by 4 1/2" tall and 2" thick. Spearco has nothing really close. Someone I know put in the 18" x 5" x 4 1/2" core they sell. We are working on a custom sized one that would be the same width and height but about 3 1/2" thick. Haven't got a quote back yet though. Opera Design sells an intercooler for that motor for $500 but I haven't seen it.

The intercoolers are sold as core only (the finned part) or with end tanks (the boxes at the end that funnel the air in and out of the core or all together with the pipes that are made for your car. Ideally you want a complete kit that you just unbolt the factory intercooler and bolt this in it's place.

is a intercooler install a DIY job or a pro job?

The intercooler should be easier than the light bulbs. It' attaches with 2 bolt and disconnect the hoses.

I have no idea how big it can be. Most ricer have door size intercoolers (LOL). Renntech claims 20hp for the coupe on their website. It's a tough one because if you are really running hard or it's hot the larger, better intercooler will make more of a difference. Also if the new intercooler has better flow than the factory unit then it will help boost.

How are the end tanks fastened? From the pic, it looks like they snap on

Avlis, they are attached in the same way many radiators with plastic end tanks are fastened, they are pressed on. You likely can't remove then and hope to get them back on.

Linh, where's my intercooler you promised me? It's only going to get hotter this summer. I want one that is mounted on top of the motor with a scoop like the WRX, not because it's better, because it looks good.

Two Intercoolers???

Could we somehow add an additional second Intercooler instead of replacing the original? The Audi TT I have has two intercoolers to get the 1.8L Turbo to 225 HP.

Is this in combination with the pulley? I could see how the additonal intake charge could benefit from superior cooling to deliver this much HP - as this will be a much warmer charge than the stock system was designed to cool. With no other mods I bet the intercooler probably gets less than half that much HP gain.

I've read there is a 1% increase in hp for every 5degrees C temp drop.

Have you taken air intake temp measurements to see what it is before or after a pulley? Or even before and after intercooler to check it's effectiveness. Is this something you can do with an OBD scan tool or do you need to drill in a sensor for more accurate info. Brandon a while back recommended a Fluke sensor. I'll ask the mechanic working on the fuel settings on Monday to check.

'Fluke' is brand name of a line of test equipment. Any good DMM with a temp setting and a good thermo sensor may be used.
