MB CD Changer question?

My Brother just bought a 2006 ML350 and his stock CD Changer can play MP3 files. I have a 2005 C230ss which was bought few months ago but my CDC doesn't play MP3 files.
Anybodys' C-Class CDC plays MP3s? Did MB just decided to change their stock CDC?

Mine doesn't..does play RWs thought...but damn I want a ML now, lol. Wonder if the '06 C changers will be able to?...and if so, any backward capability to '05 head units?

Unlikely. Unless they offer a software upgrade to the head unit, there's no way you can add MP3-CD functionality to a current head unit that doesn't have it already. It's not really the changer per se that's playing the MP3; it's the head unit.

I could be wrong, of course. It is possible that MB decided to put audio decoders in their CD changers, but that's a practice I haven't heard of. Though it would be nice for backwards compatability, as the head unit would just get audio data, not having to do the decoding itself, it'd be a little odd, as you wouldn't really be able to control folder access and stuff like that (regular CDs don't have folders, so the head unit wouldn't be able to do that).

You are in fact incorrect. The MP3 decoder is in the actual CD changer. It converts into a normal digital audio stream on the fibre optic bus. The MP3 changers are backwards compatible to all MOST-based head units.

Mucho interesting. However, I'd like to know how the MB head unit deals with folders and files. Does it just display them as CD tracks, or in some other way? Does it have any support for ID3 tags? How many files does it support? I'm just curious, really, as I have an MP3 head unit, and I'd like to know what the MB mp3 support is like.

Because the CD changer interfaces just as a normal CD changer (converting the MP3 to audio beforehand), the filenames are converted and shown as if the disc were a CD Audio with CD-Text. The ID3 tags are not used, although they could be. Only 99 tracks can be used (again, a limitation of CD Audio).

It's very similar to if you have an Alpine MP3 CD changer and hook it up through M-Bus to a head unit which has no MP3 support. So if you have, say, a 1995 C-class, you can hook up that CD changer and play MP3 discs which appear to the head unit as just a very large audio CD.

Mine either...and I'm thinking this is a tactical decision...although inclusion in '06 models would fly in the face of my logic

...with an mp3 headunit and 6-disc changer, one could hold 4.9 GB of music (or 5.6 with 800 MB/90 MIN CDs), enough to last for weeks/months, seriously undermining the demand for a $300+ MB iPod upgrade.

you can add a MP3 changer to your C class. The problem is making it fit correctly. It's a tad long. But it does work on 05 cars also.

greetingz,
"Jim's $5 Homemade W203 CD Changer Bracket" :Buy a large piece of velcro (2"x6" or so). Stick one piece to bottom of CD changer. Stick the other piece on the glovebox shelf. Connect cables to CD changer. Put large piece of paper on top of velcro on shelf. Slide CD changer on paper covered shelf to it's final position. Pull out paper and two pieces of velcro stick to each other. Insert CD's and enjoy

Steve, how much are these MP3 compatible changers? Do they work w/ the standard '05 radio?

it would undermine somewhat but not seriously, IMHO because the iPod can hold 20 gigabytes of mp3 files and you can take it with you (to listen to it somewhere else) when you leave the car, unlike the cd changer.
