I think i screwed things up...

originally, i plugged the ipod charger cable into the socket to be added. it has a light in it. I touched wires till i got it to light uning the blue wire and the black/yellow.

I then put the socket back and ...

when i plug in the ipod charger in it lights and the cigaret lighter light dims.

when I plug in the sat radio and the ipod. cigaret lighter light brightens. ipod cable light out.

nothing powers off the new sockets.

Try again round 2

1. try touching wires again to get ipod cable to light as you suggested. nothing. now the combo i got juice from doesn't work. The lighter socket light is half power and nothing works from the original outlet.

what the heck.

I should have paid someone to install this for me.

I killed the fuse for the cigaret lighter and it's past 6pm so I'm gonna have to wait till tomorrow to get a replacement.

hopefully, I know what I'm doing and can make it work.

Look in the trunk, there should be spares with the tool kit.

Thanks for all the help. I'll finish up tomorrow.

BTW - I can't find the tool kit. I checked with the tire. nothing.

here it is day 2 and I'm at my wits end.

I am trying to get power from the existing power outlet. It has 3 wires connected to it. brown, grey/blue, and yellow black.

First I replaced the fuse and the original socket works and charges my ipod.

I tried connecting the ipod charger cable into the new outlet and connecting to yellow/black and brown...nothing.

when I connected blue/grey and brown, the ipod cable lights up, but it doesn't charge the ipod.

what the heck?

I'm probably going to take a ride to the dealer later this week and see if I can talk to a service technician. maybe they can help me get power.

I'd love to know what is what but i just can't get power correctly.

BTW - which wires are for what. There are 2 wires on the new plug adapter, the tip of the plug and the side spring loaded clips. which is power and which is ground?

BeaverMjr, the yellow/black wire is only hot if you have the key the ignition and turned to accessory or "on". the gray/blue wire is only hot when you turn on your lights.

Thanks for the info. I will attempt to get the extra outlet to work this weekend. If I can't get it to, I'm taking my car in on monday anyways so I'll ask the techs at the dealer for help.

Question part number needed - dealer can't manage to order correct part.

Another question:

Since I'm running an extra outlet for powering my sat radio, I thought about adding a second extra outlet for an iPOD charging cable. I can't manage to figure out how to totally conceal the white power cable. Also, I am thinking of cutting a hole in the plastic cup area that sits under the radio and using a rubber grommet to keep the cable from falling back into the car. I want this to look clean.

The question is multi part

1. Should I scrap the idea of the iPOD power cable opting for ICE>Link, the iPOD integration kit?

If you recommend the power cable as it would save me a huge chunk of change, what is the best, cleanest looking way to snake the cable into the plastic cup part beneath the tape radio?

Does any one know the part number of the plastic cup shaped spacer that sits below the cassette radio of a 2002 c230 coupe? I had the dealer try and order the part based upon my VIN and the guy got 2 different parts that were not correct. Unfortunately, my first attempt to run an IPOD power cable came with less than stellar results and now the part number on the back of the piece I need is missing.

I would be more than happy to help you. I am working in Illinois for a while, but I will be back to KC in the real near future. I have an ashtray that is all drilled out for cables that you are welcome to if you want. I get out there for weekends, so let me know your timeframe of completing the project.

There is not a whole lot that you will need. I have all of the necessary tools to take the dash apart. Did you want to run the antenna like mine? Mine is under the vent on the hood and then passes through the firewall to the radio. Do you have COMAND or cassette? If cassette you will need to get a tape adapter, and if COMAND as long as you have the aux in you will just need a patch cord to go from the sat. radio to the COMAND. If you can find a right angle patch cable it makes things easier as the space is tight in the ashtray. I found a right angle adapter online somewhere and they are only a few bucks. Also, I went to RadioShack and got a cigarette lighter plug splitter and cut one end off and wired that in under the console to utilize the original sat radio power cable. PM me your email address and I will get with you when I can and we will have the project underway.

Are you in KC or one of the burbs? I will be in Olathe.

I just used a right angle adapter from Radio Shack. I am sure you could find a cable like that as well.
