Finished my XM install

Well, I finally finished my XM Roady install and I must say that I am very pleased with the result. It works perfectly, but I am sorry that I did not get it finished sooner. I located the antenna under the vent on the rear of the hood and I rarely get any signal loss. I ran the AUX cable from the glovebox behind the changer and into the radio compartment. I drilled a hole into the back of the ashtray housing to feed the power, signal and antenna leads. The only drawback is that I no longer have a change cup! Anyway, I wanted to share and post a few pix of the completed job.

Nope it closes, I probably would not have done it in there if I had to leave it open. I usually go to a channel and close the lid.

I could not find if it was available in Canada or not. I just did a quick look on the site. Go to www.xmradio.com to find out for sure.

Just looking down at the antenna it is very hard to see even on the red car. The camera really made it appear that it is easy to see. I bet on your black car it is nearly invisible.

XM into Canada... mabey

source: http://www.skyreport.com/view.cfm?Re...rchCriteria=xm

xm Also Ponders Move into Canada

xm Satellite Radio revealed that it's considering a move into Canada, following in the footsteps of Sirius and its plans to offer a product north of the border.

xm disclosed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing released late last week that it's working to establish a joint venture entity that would be authorized to provide its offerings in Canada. The entity is in the process of seeking authority from the Canadian government to provide satellite radio service throughout the country, the company said.

Also, xm said it anticipates the joint venture, once established, would be independently financed.

Sirius has partnered with CBC/Radio-Canada to bring its product to Canada, and both are working at the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission for a license to deliver satellite radio service north of the border. CBC/Radio-Canada said it secured distribution of two of its main channels, Radio One and La Premiere Chaine, for the Sirius service.

very nice install! that is probably what I need to do with my Sirius Starmate. mine is in the same place right now but the antenna is just sitting on the dashboard attached to the big magnetic speaker in the center near the windshield. i ran the antenna cable along the windshield to the side of the glovebox, then under the glovebox to the center console and it just plugs in. i can close my ashtray but i have to unplug the cigarette lighter adapter and antenna and aux input cable for it to all fit.

my biggest problem will be getting the antenna cable through the engine compartment to the cabin, is there a hole in the firewall that's easy to access and run the cable through? and how do i get a hard power line? cut off the cigarette lighter adapter and just wire it to a power source? do i need a fuse in the line?

On mine there is a hole through the firewall right below the master cylinder. There is a rubber gasket there so you sould see it. It is tricky to get to, but it can be done. I removed the cover above the drivers foot well to get access from the inside, and poked through with a hanger. You can also run a power line from your battery instaed of cutting into anything on the inside.

the best source of power is tapping from your radio so that your XM turns on and off when your radio does (even with the not in the ignition ), i got my directions on how to do it from buellwinkle (on that "other" forum) but it was for the old radio, so i'm not sure about if it's the same for 2005's

edit: here's his instructions

The best place to tap into for power for XM is the power antenna lead off your radio, it's the thin black wire on the bottom most of the 3 block connectors on the back of the radio. This will supply power to XM anytime the radio is on, even if the key is not in the ignition, but if you pull the key out it shuts off like the radio. Turn the radio off and XM is powered off. I used one of those little square press on connectors from Rat Shack, get the one for thin 22 gauge wire.

I had alot of engine whine with the XM, but never did with my Dell DJ. I looked at Crutchfield and found a noise filter, and it works perfectly. It eliminated all of the engine whine and now XM sounds like it is supposed to. The item number at Crutchfield is 127SNI135 and it sells for $17.99. Worth every cent to me. Just thought that I would pass this along as some of you might have the same problem.

I just don't get why anyone would go to XM and have to add a bunch of junk to your car, when the factory Sirius is such a better install. Clean, neat, the way it's supposed to be, without a bunch of extra wires, components, etc.

Ummm, maybe because I have a 2002 and I didn't have that option.

And BTW, I close my ashtray and you cannot even see anything. And, I will take my antenna install any day over MB's crappy solution.

#1 - my XM Roady (which is a few steps above junk, thank you!) install cost me less than $150 and I have no ugly antenna on the outside of my car. How much is OEM Sirius? $800?!!!!!
#2 - Sirius SUCKS! Everyone complains about repeats (they are "Hits based", so they only plays the songs you've already heard ump-teen tmes already on FM) and the DJ on the alternative rock channels are AWFUL! They babble on like FM DJ's

I would like to add that mine, and the pix I have seen from JB can surely be considered neat and clean. There are surely no wires all over the place.

Because I can easily remove my Roady2 from the ashtray and connect it to my free homekit and listen through the stereo in the house. A second antenna and power supply allows me to switch it to the other car when we're using that car. All for one low subscription price. Very portable. And the music is MUCH better on XM than Sirius.
