C230 Sport Coup + 2006 W164 ML350 + 99 Ford Escort (What the heck, it gets 38 mpg!)
Unhappy

How come the best mileage I've ever gotten is 26 mpg, stock?
Does break in period effect mileage?
Wasn't much I could do to control revs, during acceleration when driving from SD to Santa cruz, with the automatic making the decisions.

It actually got a little better than this later in the trip but that picture came out blurry. I took it because I knew someone would ask.
Thanks Buellwinkle.
The best mileage I have achieved was 29MPG for a single tank. I have seen 31.5MPG on HWY trips. I know I could get 32 or better, but would have to slow down from 78-80MPH.
I am surprised with the good mileage with the pulley, happily surprised!

Buellwinkle, your going to get killed taking snapshots at over 70mph. Interestingly your picture shows that your running 2500rpm and your analog speedo shows 66-67mpg. My car running at 2500rpm shows 64mph on the analog speedo and 65mph on the digital read out.

Could the difference be my 17” C7 wheels vs. your 16” wheels or just another indication of how inaccurate the speedo’s are.

Actually I was slowing down at an off ramp, that's why the 67 mph. So you see, it's perfectly safe, changing lanes while having both hands on the camera and you eye on the lcd display. The rpm difference is probably the 16" vs 17" wheels. That's why I like smaller wheels, lighter + smaller diameter = quicker launches.

The standard tires have a diameter of 24.88 inches and a circumference of 78.16". The C7 tires have a diameter of 24.67 inches and a circumference of 78.45".

If the speedometer is correct and the standard tires read 60mph then the C7 tires will cause the speedo to read 59.77 mph

I guess I will just have to drive faster with my C7 Wheels! Now I just need to decide which Pulley I will use to make that easier.

Lynn: something is not right with the math, smaller diameter should produce a smaller circumference.

Maybe Lynn put more air pressure in one tire over the other to get the odd results.

edvpt, you are correct about the math.

Looks like I screwed up and typed 24.67" when it should have been 24.97" for the C7 diameter.

thanks for pointing out the mistake.

Once again you have things backwards. If the standard tires read 60 then you are going 60, if the C7 reads 60 you are going faster than 60 due to the larger diameter/circumferance. The speedo reads revolutions/time, not actual distance/time. The error is less than %.4 so you are going 60.24mph on C7 tires when the speedo reads 60.

mdp c230k, in my example the car is always going 60 mph. Since the C7 tires are turning 807.62 times per mile and the stock tires turn 810.68 times per mile, the speedometer with the C7 tires at 60 mph will read 59.77 mph.

60/810.68 = X/807.62

(60x807.62)/810.68 = X

59.77 = X

You appear to be looking at it from the perspective of what is the speed of the car when the speedometer reads 60 with either set of tires.

We are both correct.

So what are the smallest circumference tires that I can get on my 16" wheels to get a more aggresive ratio for off the line performance?

I think one of the smallest diameter tires for a 16 inch wheel that is available would be a 205/40 16.

That would have a tiny sidewall.

An aspect ratio of 40 seems to be the smallest circumference available in 16" If you are really serious about drag racing you might want to pick up a couple of spare wheels and a pair of BF Goodrich Com T/A Drag Radials The only 16" size is 255/50 R 17 Note: these tires are not really suited for extended road and street use.

For a tire more suitable for the street, but probably not as good on the strip try the Goodrich g-force T/A Drag radial There are no 16" tires in this model. You could go to 225/50R15's. Or you could go to 225/45R17's which would be slightly larger than the stock tires.

Edit: In the Comp T/A series the 17" tires have the smallest circumference. Comp T/A Drag Radial Specs
