Is there a trick on opening the air filter box?

Probably a post already out there about this, but I could not find it. So here goes. I did some maintenance stuff on my w210 E320 this past weekend, so I thought I'd clean the air filters and the air filter box on my wife's C240. Never happened!!! I loosened the screw on the front, and I had a hard time with that. But then there's 2 more on the back, and there's no space for me to loosen the screws. Everything multiplied by 2 because there are 2 filters. So I gave up and was wondering how you folks who have opened the boxes before did it. Is there a special tool needed, or what's the trick? And why did MBZ go to this design? The air box on my E320 is so easy to open - just release some tabs and wahla. Nothing like the new C-class. Anyway, some help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you pull on it really hard the airbox the whole assembly just comes off. Its just 4 metal clips. Then Im sure you can find all the screws to take the top part of the airbox off. Off the top of my head I dont remember how many screws and where but once the whole box is off its easy to figure it out. It is hard to put it back though. You need a really long screwdriver to line it up on the rear to the throttle body but once you get a hang of that its a piece of cake.

1. widen the air box clips in the front and push upward... they'll come off quite easily...
2. raise up the air box until the rear clips come off... super easy...
3. unscrew 4 screws on each filter, open the box and replace the filters... (forgot what type of screw it had)
4. lay the air box and make sure metal clips are all aligned properly. push in the backend of the air box and they should clip in easily... then push in the frontend of the air box

here's the pic of the other side of the air box

MB aren't designed for DIY maintenance. Just look at the placement of the M271's oil filter

i thought it was just the 4 metal clips. ive pulled it off once when i installed my PTS. i had to remove the airfilter to access the area where the wiring harness goes through the firewall.

Okay now I'm confused. I'm pretty new to the forum, so I don't know who's full of crap and who's not. So let me get this straight - you don't need to loosen any screws to open the airbox? All you need to do is pull on it? Is there a pictorial on this? Help straighten me out.

once u pull the air box out, u need to loosen 4 screws on each end to gain access to the filter... look at the pic above and u'll see the screws...

There are two filters and four torx screws holding each filter in the box. The whole box comes off by pulling it straight up. Grab the filter box on the left and right side as you face the engine from the front of the car and forcefully pull/jerk it straight up.
