Is that carpet behind the wheels?

As I was washing the car the other day, I noticed that there's carpet on the outside of the car, right behind the wheels. It's the area that gets really dirty if you don't have mud guards. Most cars are metal there, why is the Coupe's carpet? Wouldn't that make it really difficult to clean? Or could that be sound proofing material? Help?

Just look at all four wheels, it's the area that gets really dirty if you don't have mud guards.

We discussed this at our meet last Sunday. None of us could come up with a reason why it's there, though it does seem that it would hold road salt very well.

My suggestion is to spray it out, then leave it alone.

Do you think it could be soundproofing material, to keep the bumps and noises from the road quiet when you're driving in the cabin?

I'd assume that it's both soundproofing and rustproofing material, since it's gotta be more expensive than just having flat black metal back there.

Thats exactly what it is. I think it is only on the coupes.

No, I thinks it's on 2002 and later models. Doesn't make sense to only put it on a coupe and not on other models.

My 2002 C240 was built in July 2001, and I don't see anything unusual, like carpet, near my wheels. The whole inner wheel well has a plastic liner, and in the front, there's a little extra piece of plastic just inside the trailing side. On the way in from lunch, I checked out a C240 which I just started seeing in my parking lot (I guess it might not be brand new), and it looked just like mine. There is an extra piece of plastic which hangs down a little from the front edge of the rear wheel well behind the rear door.

My 2002 C320 does have the carpet-like material on the back wheel wells. On the front it has the plastic like you described. Curious that the 240 would not have it when the 230, 320 and the 32 does. Hmmmm......

I noticed it the first time I washed my car. I always assumed it was for soundproofing purposes.

Unless the newer 2002 C240's have it too -- maybe the one I saw wasn't new. Kind of like the new fabric door seals where some 2002 C240's have it but mine was an earlier one.

Could be.... My 2002 C320 has the carpeting, but does NOT have the fabric door seals! What gives?!?!?

I dont know for sure but the "carpet" liner on our wheel arches is possibly made of polypropylene, which has no rusting properties...such as happens from stones flicking up,but more importantly it is highly hydrophobic i.e. it is extremely water repelant,so a light spray with a jet wash from time to time should prvent any accumulation of mud...then again I could be totally wrong!!!
I'll call MB U.K. later...

my front and rear wheel wells, left and right, are covered only in plastic as my previous A class had.

"Carpet" in wheel wells - the Answer

This fuzzy material in the wheel wells is designed to do only one thing - to supress road spray in rainy weather. M-B says this material significantly reduces road spray for following vehicles.

It's a dense plastic foam similar to the stuff the toolkit is stored in on the C230K coupes.

I spent three hours on my back over the weekend degreasing my rocker panels, bottoms of bumpers, etc. and prepping for Zaino. My Apr. Prod. 2001 C320 has no carpeting as described.

Is there any pattern to this phenomenon?
