Tinted Windows W203 Thread - All You want to know about window tinting a C Class
#726
Ok I will answer both your questions from personal experience. That is true that the tint will get scratched with time when open and close the windows. That happened on my 02 C class. I then replaced the tint on 2 of the windows and for the next year no scratches at all. I think when I replaced the tint the previous scratches helped smooth the contacts. So in other words worse case scenario you don't get that mold skin done and the tint scratches you can replace it and my belief is the second time around you should be fine. Now on a positive note I bought a C230 05 and have had it for 3 months now and not one scratch. Not sure if the problem has been fixed on the 05s but seems like it to me. I never had the mold skin put because I really don't want anyone messing with my windows. Plus if it does scratch its only from the inside, the scratches cant be seen from the out side.
Now the second question. I have tinted 1/4 of my front windshield. Yes, the tint will not stick on the dotted areas. So one of 2 things will happen. One is once its placed the heat from the sun will start to form a shape around those dots. If it comes out even then great leave it alone. If however its not even and some parts look nice and some parts look more stuck then just take your finger from the inside and press on the dotted areas till they are all even. One major point, there is no perfection because of the dot's. So if you are extremely picky then don't do it. Again worse case scenario it can be removed. Tint is easy to take off. May cost you a couple of bucks but it wont be too bad. Let us know what you do.

They did not put moleskin on mine but this 'fur' type lining....I am getting the car from the shop right NOW, so I will let you know how that works.

Someone stated that the moleskin eventually will wear off and the scratches will reappear. Has anyone that has actually installed the moleskin had this problem? Im running into the same problem(the vertical scratches) and dont want to remove the door panel and all that jazz if it will not LAST. Any comment will be very helpful. Thanks

Tint made remote key fob unusable
I just got my car tinted with 15% Llumar tint and was very pleased. Unfortunately there was a drawback, as I can no longer unlock my car using the key fob from far away. The only way I can unlock my car is if I point the key fob at the infrared sensor near the door handle.
I wanted to know if anyone else have had this behavior and I was surprised not to see anything about it when I searched this forum. I called the Mercedes service department about it and was informed there was a technical release put out by Mercedes saying that metallic tint can reduce the AM/FM signals and give you 50% less range with your key fob due to the receiver/antennae for the remote being in the top part of the rear windshield.
In my case, I lost no reception in my radio stations, but lost all reception using my key fob remote. I don't mind having to be close to my car to unlock it, but was just a little disappointed that this wasn't considered when building the car. Being in FL, most everyone has their car tinted, and this is the first time I've seen this behavior on any model. I should be grateful though, as this is the only complaint I have with my car and it's something that I did to it!

I am not particularly impressised with my range on my remote but it does work from probably 250 feet away clear shot but by putting the remote under my chin i can add another 150 feet to the range. i think these numbers are right but sometimes i'm not so great about approximating; and that is with a 35% tint all the way around. i wonder if they cut something when cutting the tint or some how screwed something up. try to unlock your car when the remote is near the rear window.
Does anyone elses tint get pretty scratched up from going up and down???
i love the fact i got the tint all the way around but i could live with out the scratches.

any good tint shop that has experience with mb's knows to remove the factory gaskets and replace them with felt or moleskin to prevent scratching

Yeah this is a common problem with tints and with coupes at least, also I'm not sure about sedans but if you don't have moleskin (or other fabric or have it stripped) you're going to develop streaking on your windows from dust particles.

The remote key uses RF and has IR as a backup. The IR is all that is working for you now. (direct line of sight, maybe just 30 feet?)
The RF section uses an amplifier that is connected directly on the rear window.
The problem probably is that the RF amplifier connection is broken. The amp is also used for the radio reception, ... so: Do you notice that the radio works poorly now?

When I picked up my car from the tint shop, I noticed that I'd have to stand right next to the sensor to get the doors to lock/unlock - which I wasn't too excited about of course.
Before, I was able to get the lights to blink from the 2nd floor of my office building but after I left the shop, I couldn't get a reaction even when as close as being next to the trunk area.
Fortunately for me this was a temporary thing. After dinner and all that, I tried testing my keyfob again. I was standing a few cars away and was able to unlock the door. "Reception" got better over the next few days.
I've had my car tinted for about 6 months now, and keyfob works almost as good as before (though not as sensitive). I don't think I can unlock the door while from the 2nd floor of this building anymore, but it still works when I'm inside the building on the 1st floor.
