just ordered mine from RAB Motors in San Rafael, about $85, we'll see if they can push it though because the parts man was not too confident about the order going through. On a side note, he said the part number is for a new S Class, which i dont understand because it starts with 211... and to add he said the prices are input incorrectly by MB and will probably be changed to a higher price once it is caught.Originally Posted by alboogiee

I know some of you have questioned the durability of the new generation SmartKey. Well tonight as I walked to my car in the dark I dropped the damn thing on the stone path to the driveway. After an excessive amount of profanities, I examied it in the car, and its fine. I dropped it twice too, it slipped out of my hand as I went to pick it up. There are only two little knicks (probably like a milimeter each) and they don't look bad at all.

I just placed an order on the OEM Parts website.. lets just see how it goes.

I got mine...
I asked the dealer about it and they said any dealer can get it.
Just give part numbers.

Ordered mine from OEM Parts Direct on Christmas Day - got an e-mail yesterday saying it had been shipped already. I should have it in a day or two since I'm in the same state as them.
I'll keep you guys posted as to if I have any problems with it, etc. I did enter in my VIN when ordering.

i received a confirmation of my order being shipped as well. i am a bit worried here. it was too easy to order this key. all you needed was a VIN#!

how do you order from parts direct? is it online? and do they ship international?
Anyone know if they ship internationally? Originally Posted by 14cue

I've just been on the OEM Parts Direct site and priced the key at $62 USD I'm in the UK and desperately want this key. My local dealer says it's not possible to order yet as Mercedes still have lots of the old style keys in Europe. At less than $100 it's a great price too, replacment keys in the UK are currently approximatley 165 GBP (320 USD!)
I'm temtped to try and order it to see what happens. I guess they may not like my VIN as that will clearly show it's not a US spec vehicle...

i asked them and got a reply back saying that the key will not work when you get it. they say that you're going to need to take the key to the dealer to get it activated or paired. anyone know how much this would cost?

Sorry, didn't read the entire post but is this the key that everyone wants?

i know. i heard from another post that even if it's blank you can just put it in your ignition and it'll pair but now i'm hearing this.

I got an e-mail as well saying my key had been shipped, but no tracking #. I sent Jamie an e-mail letting her know there was no tracking number but haven't heard anything back...hopefully it's in the mail and I'll get it today.
I'll keep you guys updated.

the new key looks cool with all that chrome, but its also heavier... and for something you carry around all day, the lighter the better. i had a loaner c class and was initially intregued by the key, but the weight make me like my old plastic key better. its not that much heavier, but heavier nonetheless.

We are talking very, very little weight here. I bet you can condense your key rings by one or more which will offset the "heaviness" of the 07 key. I certainly don't notice any difference in my pocket.

i have my house key and my office key.... not much room for reduction.... i guess i'm serious about my low weight!

the one aspect of the new key i DO like is when you remove your blade key, a loop pops up so the valet/parking attendent can attach something to the key so they know its your car....
MBWorld Fanatic!
Yeah that is a great idea, I don't know why it didn't have something like that in the first place, it totally defeats the purpose of the removable blade. What were the valets supposed to do before? Have a giant pile of MB keys?

I was always removing tape from my key when I got it back from my dealership, because they'd tape my tag w/info to it. Originally Posted by pmb600

Funny how they overengineer the silly cupholders, but screw up a simple key that you use every day.

Guys, I picked mine up from Ray Catena MB in NJ and it's gorgeous. If you want this key GET IT ASAP. I paid $70 (tax included) but they told me that yesterday the key went up to $170 due to it's high demand.

I ordered my key from OEM Parts Direct (http://oempartsdirect.com/) on Monday and received my key today (Friday - 12/29). I entered my VIN in the ordering process and the key arrived, I unpackaged it, put it together and took it out to my car...fired right up.
I would recommend ordering from OEM parts direct...total cost was about $65 w/ shipping and very easy to do.
Good luck guys...the new key is great, although it is a little heavier it definitely looks much better.
