C Coupe caught on fire

Yesturaday, my friend's c 230 coupe caught on fire on the freeway. She say she drove over a blanket or something and then people at the back started hornking at her tell her to pull over. Her car burned pretty bad, it was a total lost. Im thinking, its kinda silly for a car to catch on fire cause driving over some blanket? But, afterall, the insurance will pay for her and she's actually thinking of buying a new 05 coupe. Just wanted to share what i've heard, so please dun flame me!!

can you find out from your friend, what the investigation revealed as the cause for the fire ?

did the blanket get stuck somewhere in her cars' undercarriage ? Seems kinda odd, since most of the undercarriage (engine wise) is covered, unless the blanket got stuck in the car's rear axle or something...

any and all amplifying details would be appreciated to truly understand what happened.

back when my mom had an e320 we ran over a plastic grocery bag and it stuck to the underside of the car. For like a week everytime we rode in the car it smelled like burnt plastic...that was the worst ever.

Maybe it caught on the cat, that's certainly hot enough to ignite a blanket.

in the fall, driving around the neighborhood at night, ppl put their piles of leaves on the road. sometimes the wind would blow the entire pile in the middle of road and i'd drive over it. the smell of burning leaves is horrendous. cannot avoid it if there is oncoming traffic. but my car did not catch on fire...

In my old neighborhood, people got angry when you would drive through the piles of leaves on the curb, so they would hide cinder blocks under the leaves........it could get ugly!

Whoa, where do you live? That is sooo evil.

You'd think people would remove the leaves and solve the problem instead of adding to the mess I see a lawsuit coming... did u ever see anybody hit one of those things?

What?! That's pretty bad. I had a neighbor once who got tired of people driving in his yard, so he put out boards with nails in them. People are crazy.

I see nothing wrong with the car on this one, only the friend. There are plenty of places under any car for a blanket to get stuck and burn. The exhaust is not covered and runs the full length remember. All it takes is that blanket in this case to get caught on any number of small sharp objects under a car and then hit the exhaust. I have seen blankets, ropes, plastic bags and other things wrapped around axles on FWD and RWD vehicles. Prop-shafts as well. I personally think your friend is %100 to blame for this as she ran over the blanket and did not use common sense to look in the rearview to make sure the blanket came out the back. Instead like most people she kept driving like nothing happened. And thus the car caught fire. Myself I run over something I make damn sure it is still in the road after I pass over it. And a blanket I would have swerved to avoid if it was at all possible in traffic. If not then I would pull over and check for it if I did not see it behind me. I have had plastic bags wrap around my axles before because I could not avoid it. And that crap is hard as hell to get off. But also left on can cause severe damage under the car. Hopefully your friend learned her lesson and will double check next time.

things with and without wheels
She was applying make up on at the time so she has an excuse . Just dragging an object causes enough friction to ignite something .

Total idiot.

A blanket is not something you want under ANY car. The cat gets so hot it will ignite a fire on a *green* lawn.

Haha. One time a few friends and I were off roading in the middle of the summer about two years ago. He's got this modded up Tahoe and what not. When we were trying to help pull someone up some rocks, his truck caught the leaves around the car on fire. It was hilarious trying to organize a highschool fire department! On one hand, we had to keep the other truck from slipping and falling down the rocks, on the other hand we had to put out a fire.

It rocked.
