Is there a required smog check every year that you renew registration in Nevada?
In Cali, I know you don't have to get a smog check (every other year) until after the car has reached a certain age (I think 5 years, but not positive on that).
Sorry, I can't help, but was curious about the difference in regulations between Nevada and Cali.

Your grandparents bought the car for you in Nevada. It's been registered in Nevada since then, up to the present.
Now that the registration is up, you have to renew, but you are from and live in the Bay area?
Do you have to renew the registration in Nevada? Why don't you transfer the registration from Nevada to Cali (which is legally what needs to be done since you reside in Cali) and you should be fine. After your car is registered in Cali, you shouldn't have to worry about smog:
Here's a link I found that'll explain:
LINK: "Do I Really Need A Smog Check"
So it says the new law is vehicles 6 or less model-years old are exempt from the biennial (every other year) smog check.

your car should Pass smog even if you took the resonator off. if thats the only mod you did, aslong you didnt take the catalitic converter and did some crazy mods on your engine and your check engine light is not on you should be fine. you can take it to a test only smog places here in the bay area to make sure if you want. I would recomend you register you car in california cuz if you get pulled over by CHP and you have a California Drivers licence they will give you a costly ticket for not having your car registered in this state. there is a place here in walnut creek that can do the test and he will tell you if your car will pass or not.

Do what FrankW suggest and then look at your renewal. Which way is cheaper. And yes I realise the drive aspect if not possible by mail. Afterall your grands bought; so be good and visit them while you are at it.
