Question $31,800 for a 2005 C230 a good deal?

Well I've test drove both the 2005 and 2006 C230's and really like the 2005, and I can pick up a "brand new" 2005 C230 Kompressor Sport Sedan, white with grey leather and 5 speed automatic, the sunroof package, the 6 disk CD package, and the power/heated seats and power steering/mirror package for $31,800 before tax and title.

This seems like a great deal to me, or I can get a silver or grey one with grey interior with a manual transmission and without the power seats/steering/mirrors for $29,100.

Either way, I only have until August 31st however, as that's when the dealers incentives end.

I'm planning on going for it unless I see enough negative feedback that I'm not getting the best deal possible, what do you think?

Carsdirect shows that car at $31.3K in my area or $32.8K for a 2006, same exact options. Personally, I would pay the extra $1,500 and get the 2006 with the V6, maybe even negotiate a better deal than that. I haven't driven them but the V6's from MB sound better are smoother and if you like to keep cars for 10 years you won't be spending a small fortune on a supercharger, if you trade cars every 3-4 years like me then you'll get the higher residual of a 1 year newer car that will more than pay the $1,500 back, either way you can't lose. Also, you option and color choices are endless with the 2006, with 2005 you are limited to what other people didn't want.

Price with MB flutuate weekly, just because you got a deal in January doesn't mean there's good deals to be had to day, but I did beat you, I got my 2004.5 leftover a year ago for $25.3K brand new (with manual trans but an auto would have been $1,200 higher) and 4 years free maintenance.

Found this over at Edmunds.com which is making me feel more at ease with the price the dealer quoted.

Edmunds TMV Price $32K+

He said with tax, title and delivery it should come to just over $34,000 all said and done.

Strange....For some reason I couldn't get the Edmunds site link to show the price with the various options I selected to apply to the above post.

But in any case, if you add in the sun roof, automatic, heated / memory seats, power steering column/mirrors, 6-disk and split seats, with White color you'll get the TMV price that it displayed for me at $32,553

Also... here's NADA's price calculator on the same car, which reinforces what Edmunds has to say:

NADA MSRP and Invoice

Start at invoice, and subtract the 3% holdback, and take off the incentive of $ 2000. Ignore the destination charge of $ 720. (The sales manager can make it go away.)

The car described at the top of the post, a 2005 C230, White, Leather, Sunroof, Heated Seats, CDC, and power drivers seat/steering has an invoice of 29,603, less 3% ($ 888), less incentive (cash to dealer $ 2,000) gives us $ 26,715.00 add tax and license amd drive home.

You are of course helping the manager by taking the unit off his hands at minimal profit (Yes, he does make 2% if he gets an excellent rating from you.) He might also qualify for other rewards for meeting sales goals.

If he laughs, insults you, tells you this is the last car like this one, price is only good today, or wears a path in the carpet running to the "managers office", take your money out the door. Sounds like the guy you are talking to wanted you to contribute more than $ 5,000 for his hard work in selling you the car. Many dealers average $ 2,000 per unit, so if he only makes $ 534 from you, someone else can help keep up the average. Why should you? You have a goldmine or better yet, an oil well in your back yard?

Try other dealers. The five huge dealers in So Cal often sell cars on this basis, might be worth a drive to pick one up!

I'm not quite sure where you got the invoice price of $29,603 as both NADA Guides and Edmunds quote $32,462 invoice.

The original workup I did included a split 60/40 rear seat but as it turns out the one I'm looking to buy doesn't have that option, so my earlier post (above) with a slightly higher price reflects that.

Also, as for hold back... I thought that dealers had a limited time to sell the vehical in order to get factory hold back money? Being that the 2006 are out, I would assume that if they are getting any hold back at all, it's not the 3% you were/are assuming.

And destination/delivery charges are something I've NEVER had any luck getting out of. It seems that every car I've ever bought always included it as part of the standard invoice/MSRP price.

Here's the info I got from Edumnds on the original car w/out the split fold down rear seat:

2005 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C230 Kompressor Rwd 4dr Sport Sedan (1.8L 4cyl S/C 6M)

Invoice
$27,203

Optional Equipment $4,539
Sunroof Package $1,665
5-Speed Driver-Adaptive Automatic Transmission $1,293
Heated Front Seats $632
Power Driver Seat and Steering Column w/Memory $558
6-Disc CD Changer $391
Color Adjustment -$71 (Alabaster White)

Destination Charge $720
Total Invoice Price with Options $32,462

My dealer offered $31,800 which is approx $660 below invoice.

Jay J,

I did quote the wrong figures, I opened the folder for the coupe, not the sedan. Recalculating I get $30,143.

So your deal is not perfect, but not terribly hurtful either.

Good Luck, I hope you get the car you really want!

Granted my car is stock. And I mean stock! No heated seats/ sunroof/ or xenons. My seats crank to go back and fourth but are auto to recline the upper part which doesn't bother me. Sure, it will hurt resale value but I'll worry about that in 5 years. I am happy with the car. Its midnight blue (which I find out they discontinued) and with a clean tint all around looks gorgeous. Only upgrade it does have is 6 disc changer. I find that usefull. I'm sure I would have found the other stuff usefull as well, especially the auto seats.
Oh well.....after it was all said and done I paid 26500.00 in May. Hey I gotta start somewhere!

Well... I did it!

I bought the car yesterday, got them to drop the price by $300 so the total before tax and whatnot was $31,580.

I also got a respectiable trade in on my old 1994 Saturn junker :-)

I decided to buy the extended warranty which brings it up from 4 year, 50K miles to 7 years, 70K miles.

It was $3300 which may have been a bit steep, but since it was from the dealership I felt a bit more at ease with it, as I've heard some real horror stories from friends who got extended warranties over the internet.

In any case, I'm happy with my purchace, and thrilled to be driving a Benz for the first time!

Here's a picture of my new ride!
