ESP message - What does it mean?

The "ESP - Elec. Stabil. Prog. Visit Workshop" message has been happening ocasionally for about a week or so. Anybody know what this means? (or how much it'll cost?)

My '02 C240 has had this happen twice in the past few months, each time cleared with a reboot of the computer by shutting down the engine and restarting.

I'm going in for a B service next week, so plan to have them pull the codes from the OBD and see what's up. My educated guess is that we need a software update...which should be minimal in cost, even out of warranty [my new car warranty still has over a year to run, but the tone of your question implies yours is no longer covered].

It's highly unlikely that anything mechanical is really wrong - just the computer getting the wrong signals from the sensors.

.

Thanks John.
When you have yours serviced, please let me know the outcome. I'm not due for a B service for another 2300 miles. I'll have them look at it then. (You got it. This will be my first service 'off' warranty.)

pretty much everyone that bought a 2001-2002 had this problem. Go to the dealership and have them check it out and they will replace the wiring harnesses.

I did NOT have this problem with my 2001. I know two members here in Dallas with 2002 models, and they have not had this "problem" either. Let's avoid the generalities, please.

I agree; this "universal" problem has eluded me as well.

If it says to take it in, I'd say that it would be best to take it in. And sooner rather than waiting for your next service, if possible.

I cannot tell any difference when I switch the ESP off while driving. Has anyone experienced anything?

it might be that the voltage of your battery is dropping below 10v which wont be enough to turn ESP on. it happened to me, but the message i got said that ESP was not available...
check the voltage of your battery, could be the problem.

I've alerted the dealer who will be doing the work on our car [MB Reno, as we are starting a long road trip and spending a couple of days in Reno] that he needs to be prepared to do the work on this problem in addition to the B service. The service mgr agrees with me it is probably the well-known problem with the wiring connectors, but they have to pull the codes first to be sure. I'll post something from the hotel when I know what they did or didn't do to get at the problem. [Appt is for the Tues after the holiday, 9/6].

2006 ML350 back from dealer after 4 weeks, now back for oil consumption test!,2003 C230 Sport
I had this same problem on my 03 c230k. I went to an Indy mechanic too replace my front tire rods. So my front alignment was off.Went too dealer for an alignment an that cleared the code out.
