2001 C320 Sedan - totally unmodified
I'm going in for a B service next week, so plan to have them pull the codes from the OBD and see what's up. My educated guess is that we need a software update...which should be minimal in cost, even out of warranty [my new car warranty still has over a year to run, but the tone of your question implies yours is no longer covered].
It's highly unlikely that anything mechanical is really wrong - just the computer getting the wrong signals from the sensors.
When you have yours serviced, please let me know the outcome. I'm not due for a B service for another 2300 miles. I'll have them look at it then. (You got it. This will be my first service 'off' warranty.)

If it says to take it in, I'd say that it would be best to take it in.
And sooner rather than waiting for your next service, if possible.
